Chapter 14 - The First Time Lily Said Grandma

Nearly ten months after the mall, Lily saw Brenda again.

Not because Mom demanded it.

Because Lily asked.

She was drawing family members at the kitchen table.

Mommy.

Aunt Kendra.

the twins.

Uncle Richard.

Then she drew a woman with gray hair standing far away.

“Who’s that?”

Lily looked at me as though I was slow.

“Grandma.”

I waited.

“Do you want to see Grandma?”

She shrugged.

“Maybe.”

Her therapist helped me plan it.

Public park.

Thirty minutes.

I remained present.

No gifts.

No pressure for hugs.

Brenda arrived fifteen minutes early.

She brought nothing.

That was harder for her than people might think.

Lily hid behind my leg at first.

Mom crouched several feet away.

“Hi, Lily.”

Lily did not answer.

Mom waited.

Eventually Lily asked:

“Why did you leave me?”

Every adult instinct in my mother’s face tried to find a softer answer.

Then she stopped herself.

“Because I made a very bad choice.”

Lily looked at me.

I stayed quiet.

“Were you shopping?”

Mom’s eyes filled.

“I went to a meeting. Then I kept doing things when I should have come to you.”

“Mommy came.”

“Yes.”

“She always comes.”

Mom nodded.

“You’re right.”

Lily picked at the edge of her jacket.

Then ran toward the swings.

She did not hug Brenda.

Mom did not ask.

That mattered.

At the end of thirty minutes, Lily waved goodbye.

Brenda started crying only after we were far enough away that Lily could not see.

I did not comfort her.

I also did not enjoy it.

On the drive home, Lily asked:

“Is Grandma good now?”

I looked in the rearview mirror.

“Grandma is trying to make better choices.”

“Is that good?”

“Yes.”

“Does that mean she babysits?”

May you like

“No.”

Lily accepted that far more easily than most adults in my family had.
