Chapter 2 - MY DAUGHTER HAD BEEN GIVEN ANOTHER NAME

Detective Mara Ruiz arrived with two plainclothes officers forty minutes later.

Clara came separately.

Nobody used the main elevator together.

Nobody contacted hotel security beyond a request to restrict access to my floor.

Mom texted me four times.

Where are you?

We are waiting.

Daniel.

Do not embarrass me tonight.

I replied:

Migraine. Starting without me is fine.

She called.

I let it ring.

Mara stood near the window.

“Mrs. Ashford, I need you to understand that what you tell me tonight may become part of a criminal investigation.”

Lena sat on the sofa with Grace sleeping against her chest.

“I understand.”

“Are you here voluntarily?”

“Yes.”

“Is anyone threatening you right now?”

“Not in this room.”

“Do you believe someone is looking for you?”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

“Evelyn Ashford.”

Hearing Mom’s name in a police interview made the impossible solid.

Mara asked Lena to begin with the parking garage.

Lena did.

Slowly.

No dramatic speeches.

Just details.

Concrete ramp.

Peter Hale’s gray SUV.

Chemical smell.

Waking with one shoe missing.

A bedroom with painted pine walls.

A lake visible through bare trees.

No cell service she could access.

Locks outside the bedroom door.

A camera above the kitchen.

June Calder, a fifty-nine-year-old woman who cooked, washed clothes, and repeatedly told Lena cooperation would “get everybody home sooner.”

“How did you escape?” Mara asked.

Lena looked at Grace.

“June helped me.”

That surprised me.

“The woman guarding you?”

“She wasn’t there at the beginning.”

“When did she start?”

“After I was pregnant.”

“Why did she help?”

“Eventually?”

Lena’s voice softened.

“Because Grace started calling her Nana.”

Mara wrote something.

Lena continued.

“June told me she was hired as a live-in maternity nurse. She said Evelyn told her I had severe psychiatric problems and was hiding from my husband during a divorce.”

“You couldn’t tell her otherwise?”

“I did.”

“Did she believe you?”

“Not at first.”

Lena gave a tired laugh.

“I was locked inside a house telling her a billionaire’s mother kidnapped me. I wouldn’t have believed me either.”

“What changed?”

“Evelyn.”

My mother had visited after Grace was born.

She became angry because Lena refused to sign a postnatal affidavit saying Daniel was not the father.

June heard Evelyn threaten to move the baby if Lena continued resisting.

“Move her where?” I asked.

Lena looked at me.

“I don’t know.”

I stood.

Mara said my name.

I sat back down.

Lena continued.

“After that, June started leaving things where I could find them.”

“What things?”

“Newspapers. Once, a prepaid phone with no service.”

“Why no service?”

“She was scared.”

“How did you finally get out?”

“Peter came less often. Evelyn stopped visiting as much. Three days ago, June told me Peter was taking us somewhere else Friday morning.”

“Where?”

“She didn’t know.”

Lena’s hands tightened around Grace.

“She gave me two hundred dollars, an old coat, and the code to the mudroom alarm.”

“You walked?”

“To a gas station.”

“Then?”

“A woman drove us to Kenosha.”

“Do you know her name?”

“Yes.”

Mara wrote it down.

“From Kenosha?”

“Metra and buses. I knew Daniel was at the Langham because Evelyn left a board itinerary in the kitchen last month.”

Mom had left it.

The detail made her carelessness almost obscene.

“You came directly here?”

“Yes.”

“Why ask for work?”

Lena looked embarrassed.

“I didn’t know who was watching the entrance.”

“I thought if I stood there like someone asking strangers for help, nobody would think I was waiting for him.”

It had worked.

Almost too well.

I had nearly walked past my wife.

Mara asked whether Lena had identification.

“No.”

“Grace?”

Lena reached inside the lining of the coat.

A folded document emerged.

“I took this from June’s desk.”

It was a Wisconsin birth certificate.

Child:

ANNA MARIE REYES.

Mother:

LENA REYES.

Father:

NOT LISTED.

My stomach turned.

Grace had lived fourteen months under another name.

Mara studied it.

“Is this the only identity used for your daughter?”

“As far as I know.”

“Where was she born?”

“A private birthing center near Milwaukee.”

“Were you allowed to leave the property?”

“For the birth. Peter drove.”

“Did anyone use your real name?”

“No.”

“Who handled paperwork?”

“June and another woman.”

Clara leaned closer.

“What woman?”

“Lawyer. Maybe. She said her name was Susan.”

I knew no Susan.

Mara photographed the certificate.

“We will need to establish Grace’s identity and parentage through proper channels.”

“I’ll do whatever you need.”

I looked toward Lena.

“DNA?”

“Yes,” Mara said. “But this document is evidence regardless.”

Lena touched the birth certificate.

“There’s something on the back.”

Mara turned it over.

A photocopied intake form had been folded behind it.

Emergency contact:

EVELYN ASHFORD.

Relationship to mother:

MOTHER.

My mother had not merely known Lena was alive.

She had inserted herself into the birth of my child using a false family relationship.

Clara’s phone buzzed.

She read something.

“What?”

She looked at Mara first.

Then at me.

“Peter Hale’s security company is still receiving money.”

“From Ashford?”

“No.”

She turned the phone around.

“Hale Protective Services was paid last month by an LLC called Willow Harbor Management.”

“Who owns it?”

“I’m tracing.”

Lena went pale.

“Willow Harbor.”

“What?”

“That was written on the mailbox at the house.”

Mara stood.

“We need the location.”

Lena gave enough landmarks for Clara to identify a property outside Fontana, Wisconsin.

Then Clara found the deed.

Willow Harbor Management LLC.

Manager:

Ashford Family Heritage Foundation.

I knew the foundation.

My mother chaired it.

The house where Lena had been imprisoned belonged to an entity my mother controlled.

Then Clara scrolled to the most recent property filing.

“There’s one more authorized person.”

“Who?”

She looked at me.

May you like

“Daniel Ashford.”

My own name was legally attached to the house where my wife had been held.
