Chapter 6 - THE OFFER DANIEL THOUGHT I WOULD TAKE

Daniel came home early on a Thursday carrying flowers.

That should have warned me.

He had never believed in flowers unless guilt needed packaging.

He placed them on the kitchen island and said, “We need to talk.”

I almost smiled.

Finally.

He told me the affair had “become complicated.”

He said he cared about Vanessa.

He said our marriage had been “emotionally over for years.”

Then he proposed something he clearly believed was generous.

I could keep the townhouse for two years.

He would continue paying my health insurance.

I would receive a $2 million settlement.

In exchange, I would resign as co-trustee, waive claims involving Whitmore Industries, and sign a confidentiality agreement covering “private family and business matters.”

I sat very still.

“How long have you been planning this?”

His eyes shifted.

“That’s not the point.”

“It is to me.”

He pushed the settlement packet across the counter.

On page fourteen was the clause that mattered.

My resignation from the trust would be effective immediately.

Not after divorce.

Immediately.

“You need me gone before something happens.”

His face tightened.

“Claire, don’t turn this into another investigation.”

Another.

Interesting word.

“What investigation?”

He recovered quickly.

“I mean don’t analyze every sentence like you’re trying to find a trap.”

I closed the packet.

“You’re offering me money to surrender a fiduciary role.”

“I’m offering you dignity.”

There it was.

The same word Margaret would later use in the ballroom.

Dignity, in Whitmore language, meant silence that benefited them.

I pushed the packet back.

“No.”

Daniel’s face changed.

“You haven’t even considered it.”

“Yes, I have.”

“You could walk away wealthy.”

“I already have enough.”

“You don’t understand what you’re risking.”

That sentence stayed with me.

Not what I was losing.

What I was risking.

He knew something was coming.

After he left the kitchen, I texted Harrow one line.

Accelerate the review.

The next morning, we learned why Daniel was suddenly desperate.

Whitmore Industries’ bank had scheduled a covenant review in six weeks.

And someone had begun preparing amended related-party disclosures that removed Vanessa’s company completely.

They weren’t planning to correct the books.

They were planning to clean them.
