Chapter 14 - RYAN ASKED FOR SOMETHING I COULD NOT GIVE HIM

Grace was three when Ryan asked me to forgive him.

Not during court.

Not through attorneys.

At the end of a mediated parenting meeting.

By then his visits had progressed to unsupervised daytime contact under a structured plan.

No overnights.

No access to my home.

No personal financial authority.

No involvement in my medical care.

Boundaries that would once have offended him had become ordinary.

He waited until Grace left with the child specialist.

Then:

“Emily.”

I looked up.

“I know saying sorry isn't enough.”

“Okay.”

“I need to know if you think I've changed.”

That question belonged to him more than me.

“I think you behave differently.”

He flinched.

“That sounds clinical.”

“It is.”

“Do you trust me?”

“With Grace under the current structure?”

“Yes.”

“With you?”

“No.”

He looked down.

At thirty-seven, Ryan seemed older than the man beside the well.

Not because prison had transformed him.

Because consequences had removed some of the certainty from his face.

“I was trying to hold everything together.”

I almost became angry.

Then he corrected himself.

“No.”

He took a breath.

“I kept telling myself that.”

Better.

“The company. Ben. Your dad. Our finances.”

His eyes met mine.

“I decided being the person who fixed things meant I got to decide how everyone behaved.”

“Yes.”

“And when you called Marianne, I knew you were taking that away.”

“Yes.”

He swallowed.

“I wanted you afraid.”

The sentence landed quietly.

No excuses left inside it.

“Yes.”

“I don't know how to forgive myself for that.”

I answered:

“That's not something I can do for you.”

He nodded.

Then:

“Can you?”

“Can I what?”

“Forgive me?”

I thought about Grace.

The recording.

The mud.

Mr. Collins opening the gate.

Dad's ledger.

All the years of other people making decisions because they believed their reasons were important enough.

“I don't know.”

Ryan looked disappointed.

I let him.

Disappointment is not danger.

Not every uncomfortable feeling needs to be managed for someone else.

That may have been the clearest evidence I had changed too.
