Chapter 5 - THE MARRIAGE WAS ONLY HALF THE PLAN

The voicemail changed the investigation.

Not because sophisticated voice cloning was impossible.

Because it meant someone had prepared.

They had collected Olivia’s speech patterns.

They had obtained internal forms.

They had forged signatures using more than one method.

And they had begun before the wedding.

Carter Precision suspended Olivia’s remote access voluntarily while an outside cybersecurity firm reviewed the breach.

Harold called it a protective measure.

Olivia understood.

It still felt like being locked out of her father’s company.

She sat in Rebecca’s office that afternoon while a forensic consultant examined copies of the files.

“Don’t focus on how perfect the voice sounds,” he said. “Focus on distribution.”

“What does that mean?”

“Who received it? Who benefited? What happened immediately afterward?”

Sarah received the voicemail.

Sarah added Daniel’s device.

Daniel’s device later approved logins into Carter Precision.

Simple.

Rebecca asked, “Could Daniel have made it?”

“Possibly. Could also have hired someone. We need device records.”

Those would require consent, discovery, or legal process.

No miracles.

No button that revealed the truth.

Olivia drove to her aunt’s condo in North Hills that evening.

She had agreed not to stay alone in the house while the domestic violence case developed.

Her phone filled with messages.

Some were kind.

Some were not.

Elaine had already started calling relatives.

Apparently Olivia had “ambushed Daniel after drinking.”

Apparently Daniel had “never laid a hand on a woman.”

Apparently Olivia’s boxing background proved she was the dangerous one.

At 7:14 p.m., Daniel called from an unknown number.

Olivia rejected it.

It rang again.

Then Rebecca texted.

His criminal attorney says Daniel wants to disclose information relevant to the stolen documents. You are under no obligation to speak with him. If you do, do it through counsel.

Olivia stared at the message.

Twenty minutes later, Rebecca arranged a recorded conference call between attorneys.

Daniel sounded tired.

“Liv.”

“Don’t call me that.”

Silence.

Then, “Okay.”

His lawyer interrupted.

“My client is not discussing the pending assault allegation. This conversation concerns financial matters.”

Olivia almost admired the precision.

Daniel said, “Mark took the red case.”

“I know.”

“He wanted one file.”

“Thomas Mercer.”

Daniel stopped.

Olivia continued.

“I know Dad and your father were partners.”

Another silence.

“How much do you know?”

“That Dad paid for your father’s shares. That he established trusts for you and Mark.”

Daniel breathed out.

“My mother said those trusts were fake.”

“Rebecca has copies.”

“My mother said Robert created paperwork later to cover what he did.”

“Why would Dad give your family eight hundred and fifty thousand dollars after stealing from you?”

“That’s not what she told us.”

“What did she tell you?”

Daniel’s attorney said his name sharply.

Daniel ignored him.

“She said your father forced Dad to sign over his interest when the company was failing. Then Dad died before he could fight it. She said Robert paid a little money afterward because he was scared she’d sue.”

Olivia looked at Rebecca.

Rebecca wrote one word on her legal pad.

LIE.

Daniel kept talking.

“Mark believed we were owed part of Carter Precision.”

“And you?”

“I believed it too.”

“So you married me.”

“I met you before I knew who your father was.”

That landed differently.

Olivia had assumed even their first date was part of the scheme.

Daniel continued.

“My mother figured it out after we’d been dating four months.”

“And then?”

“She told me who you were.”

“You kept dating me.”

“Yes.”

“You proposed.”

“Yes.”

“You asked about my trust.”

“Yes.”

His answers were getting quieter.

Olivia pressed the phone harder to her ear.

“And last night you took off your belt.”

Daniel said nothing.

His attorney interrupted again.

“We’re moving outside the scope of this call.”

Olivia closed her eyes.

“Why did Mark need the Thomas Mercer file?”

Daniel answered before his lawyer could stop him.

“Because of the sale.”

“What sale?”

“Halcyon.”

“How did you know?”

Daniel whispered something to his attorney.

Then he said, “My mother knew Carter Precision might sell almost two months ago.”

Rebecca sat forward.

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

“Daniel.”

“I swear I don’t know.”

Olivia said, “Then tell me what you do know.”

Daniel’s next words were almost too quiet to hear.

“Mark said if the company sold, the old Mercer records would be reviewed during due diligence.”

“And?”

“And Mom said there was something in those records that could destroy our family.”

Olivia looked at Rebecca.

Daniel added one final sentence.

“She wasn’t afraid you’d find out your father stole from us.”

May you like

His voice cracked.

“She was afraid you’d find out what she did with the money.”
