Chapter 7 - Robert Took My Phone for a Reason

Police recovered my phone from Robert’s office.
Not the garden.
Not Michael’s pocket.
Robert’s locked desk.
He claimed he put it there to keep evidence safe after:
“a chaotic family confrontation.”
The detective asked why he did not hand it to police.
Robert had no good answer.
My phone contained three things he probably did not want me reading while the family argument unfolded.
The Riverside email.
A voicemail from my obstetrician.
And a message from Ashley.
The voicemail said:
Sarah, Riverside contacted us regarding your fertility records. There may be a documentation issue. This does not mean there is anything wrong with the pregnancy or parentage. Please call us before drawing conclusions from any outside testing.
I had not heard it.
I was in the garden by then.
Ashley’s message had arrived seventeen minutes before Robert took the phone.
DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING. DAD KNOWS ABOUT A PROBLEM AT RIVERSIDE.
I stared at those words.
Ashley had sent them while standing in the same house.
“Why didn’t she just tell me?”
“She was scared,” Maya said.
“So she texted.”
“Yes.”
“And then watched them bury me.”
Maya did not defend her.
Good.
Later Ashley explained.
Robert had told the family that morning there was:
“a serious marital issue.”
Linda produced the paternity report.
Michael broke down.
Then Robert brought out a document.
A statement.
It said I admitted the baby was conceived through an affair and agreed not to pursue any claims against Riverside, the Mercer family, or related entities concerning the pregnancy.
There it was.
Not divorce papers.
Not custody documents.
A liability release wrapped around a confession.
I refused to sign.
The argument moved outside.
Then became what happened at the hole.
My pregnancy had not merely triggered Linda’s obsession with blood.
Someone wanted my signature.

The accusation gave the document a story.
And the dirt was supposed to give me fear.
