Chapter 14 - THE PLAYROOM DIDN’T STAY A CRIME SCENE

At fifteen, Esme asked to reopen the playroom.
Not for sentimental reasons.
She wanted the space.
Mom had finally sold the mansion after spending two years pretending she might someday feel comfortable there again.
Before closing, we were allowed one final visit.
The playroom had been released by investigators long before.
The steel compartment remained empty in the wall.
No gun.
No evidence markers.
Just a rectangular hole where four years of silence had once lived.
Esme wheeled toward the dollhouse.
Dust covered the roof.
“The elevator still works.”
She pressed the tiny button.
Nothing happened.
“Traitor.”
I laughed.
Mom stood in the doorway.
She had difficulty entering.
Not physically.
Memory.
I asked:
“Why here?”
She knew what I meant.
Why hide the weapon in our room?
“Because nobody would search it before getting you out.”
“You used us.”
She flinched.
“I used the room.”
“Because it belonged to us.”
“Yes.”
That difference wasn't enough.
Mom knew it.
“I’m sorry.”
No explanation afterward.
That mattered.
Esme opened one miniature bedroom.
A tiny wheelchair sat beside the plastic bed.
Dad had made two.
One pink.
One blue.
I found mine beneath the miniature desk.
For several minutes, none of us spoke.
Then Mom said:
“I used to think if I admitted one decision was wrong, everything I did afterward would become meaningless.”
“Did it?”
“No.”
She looked toward us.
“Some things protected you.”
A pause.
“Some things protected me from admitting I was scared.”
That was probably the closest she would ever get to one clean answer.
Before we left, Esme asked if she could take the dollhouse.
I stared.
“You want that thing?”
“Dad built it.”
“The murder weapon was behind it.”
“So?”
I understood her before Mom did.
The room did not have to belong forever to the worst thing hidden inside it.
We moved the dollhouse to our new apartment.
The miniature elevator eventually worked again.
Esme repaired it herself.

She refused Dante’s help.
He pretended not to be offended.
