Chapter 5 - The Architect of the Fall
“Shut up, Claire,” Ethan hissed, looking nervously down the hall toward the nurses' station. “Keep your voice down.”
The major twist of my destroyed marriage wasn't just that Madison had lied. It was that Ethan had orchestrated his own ruin without even knowing it.
“You didn't know she paid Lucas for the pregnancy,” I said, my voice rising, vibrating with clarity. “But you knew she took the money. You helped her hide the embezzlement during the divorce.”
Ethan’s silence was a confession.
He hadn’t been a victim of Madison’s financial theft; he had been her accomplice. He had deliberately weaponized the missing funds in court to destroy my reputation and take our home, assuming Madison had just spent the cash on herself. He had covered up federal wire fraud to protect the woman he was having an affair with—never realizing that the money he was helping her hide was the very money used to buy his brother’s sperm.
“You committed perjury in a sworn deposition to cover up her theft,” I said, pulling my phone from my purse. “And you used that perjury to seize my assets.”
“Claire, think about what you’re doing,” Ethan begged, dropping the commanding tone he had used only ten minutes earlier. His hands were shaking. “If you open that divorce settlement back up, they’ll look at the foundation's taxes. They’ll look at everything. We’ll both go to prison.”
“Not both of you,” Adrian intervened, his voice a calm anchor in the storm. “As a medical professional who just uncovered financial extortion tied to clinic procedures, I am legally obligated to report this. The hospital’s legal team already has the altered records.”
Ethan spun on Madison, his eyes wild. “You stupid, greedy parasite. You destroyed me. I’m going to throw you out on the street. I’ll make sure you don’t get a dime.”
