Chapter 2 - The Weight of the Ledger

I didn't step outside. I moved to the edge of the dining room as Elena and one of the detectives bypassed Daniel entirely and went straight for the kitchen.
Daniel’s smirk collapsed into confusion. “Hey! Who the hell are you? You can’t just walk in here!”
He reached for Elena’s shoulder, but my father stepped in his path, a solid, immovable wall. “Keep your hands in your pockets, Daniel, or I will break your jaw before they read you your rights.”
In the kitchen, the sound of a scuffle echoed over the tile. Elena emerged a moment later, gripping Vivian by the elbow. In Elena's other hand was a small, fireproof biometric safe that Vivian had managed to drag out from beneath the pantry floorboards.
Daniel blinked at the safe, then at his mother. "Mom? What is that?"
He genuinely didn't know. The realization hit me with a cold clarity. For three weeks, I had known about the forged notary documents. I knew Vivian had paid a crooked official to fake my signature, preparing to grant Daniel permanent authority over my mother's trust the second it transferred at midnight.
But a forged signature didn't explain why a wealthy socialite was crawling on her hands and knees to hide a lockbox from financial crime investigators.
“Put that down,” Vivian hissed, struggling against Elena’s grip. “That is private property. I want my lawyer.”
“You’ll get him,” Elena said calmly. She handed the safe to the woman with the evidence case. “But first, we’re executing the warrant signed twenty minutes ago by Judge Harrison.”
My father turned to the twelve dinner guests, who were still sitting frozen in their chairs. “I suggest you all leave. Now.”
Chairs scraped violently against the floor as the guests scrambled for the coatroom. Daniel watched them go, his face pale, the false bravado entirely stripped away. He looked at me, a panicked desperation in his eyes.
“Claire,” he said, his voice dropping to a plea. “Claire, tell them to stop. What is going on?”

I touched my stinging cheek. The forgery was just the surface. Whatever was in that box was the real reason they had trapped me in this marriage, and Vivian had been keeping it a secret even from her own son.
