Chapter 11 - Claire Turned on Her Mother

Claire requested a proffer through her new attorney.
Grant was no longer representing her.
Cynthia had hired separate counsel.
Malcolm had stopped answering everyone.
The alliance was breaking apart.
Claire offered to cooperate with the financial-exploitation investigation if prosecutors considered her assistance when making charging and sentencing recommendations.
I was furious.
“She abused my parents and now she gets rewarded for talking?”
Rebecca did not soften the answer.
“Cooperation is not innocence.”
Claire admitted altering the power-of-attorney packet.
She admitted allowing Grant’s paralegal to attach my signature page.
She admitted taking control of my parents’ accounts.
She admitted ordering the locks changed.
She denied personally striking Dad.
The video mostly supported that.
Grant had shoved him once.
Cynthia had slapped my mother.
Claire’s violence was less direct and in some ways more deliberate.
She controlled food.
Phones.
Money.
Access.
Shelter.
“Why?” investigators asked.
Claire cried.
I was not there, but I watched the recorded proffer later.
“At first I thought it was temporary,” she said. “Cynthia said once the land closed, everyone would have money and Daniel would understand.”
“And when Robert refused?”
“Everything got worse.”
“Why didn’t you stop?”
Claire looked at the table.
“Because by then Grant and I had taken the advance. We couldn’t repay it. And I thought if Daniel came home before closing, I’d lose him and everything else.”
So she chose escalation.
That mattered.
Not one bad day.
Repeated decisions.
Claire also revealed where Malcolm had gone.
West Virginia.
He was trying to move several mineral-option agreements into another company before investigators froze them.
Authorities caught the transfers through banking preservation orders.
My parents’ property was finally protected.
But Mom asked me a question after hearing about Claire’s cooperation.
“Do you hate her?”
I thought about it.
“Yes.”
Then corrected myself.
“Sometimes.”
That was more honest.
Ten years of love does not evaporate on command.

It becomes contaminated.
Different thing.
