Chapter 13 - Courtney Finally Said the Sentence I Needed Years Earlier

The divorce mediation happened almost eight months after San Diego.

By then the anger had lost some heat.

The facts had not.

Courtney and I divided the practical pieces of our marriage.

Savings.

Furniture.

Retirement contributions.

The car.

The house was mine from before marriage, so it remained mine.

We worked through the rest with more exhaustion than hostility.

Near the end, Courtney asked for ten minutes alone with me in the conference room.

Rachel agreed as long as both of us were comfortable.

Courtney sat across from me.

She looked different.

Not physically.

Less managed.

“I kept trying to find the moment where everything broke,” she said.

I didn’t answer.

“I used to think it was when you put the messages on the wall.”

“It wasn’t.”

“I know.”

She took a breath.

“It was when Paige cried and I looked away.”

There it was.

No mother excuse.

No Mindy excuse.

No birthday excuse.

Just the act.

“I was afraid of my family,” she continued. “And I made two children pay for my fear.”

My throat tightened.

“Yes.”

She nodded, tears forming.

“I’m sorry.”

It was the first apology from her I truly accepted.

Acceptance is not restoration.

That distinction saved both of us.

“I believe you,” I said.

She cried harder.

Then she asked, “Do you think they’ll ever want me around again?”

“I don’t know.”

“Would you stop them if they did?”

“No.”

She looked surprised.

“If they want a relationship with you someday and the therapist agrees it’s healthy, I won’t stand in the way.”

“And if they don’t?”

“Then you live with that.”

She closed her eyes.

“That’s fair.”

It wasn’t fair.

Children being hurt by adults is never fair.

But it was the consequence available.

We signed the settlement that afternoon.

No courtroom war.

No vindictive destruction.

Just the legal end of a marriage that had already ended beside a tiny table near a restaurant kitchen.

When I got home, Lucas asked if the divorce was done.

“Yes.”

“Are you okay?”

“I think so.”

Paige looked up from her coloring book.

“Is Courtney okay?”

“I think she will be.”

That answer seemed enough.

Then Lucas asked if we could order tacos.

Life is merciful that way.

Sometimes the next chapter arrives disguised as dinner.
