Chapter 7 - Bree Found a Way to Answer

The first time Bree answered a question clearly, it happened with her eyes.

Dr. Kessler brought in a speech therapist who specialized in minimally conscious patients. Her name was Hannah, and she had the patience of a saint and the practicality of a mechanic.

“One blink for yes,” she told Bree. “Two for no. We’re going to keep it simple.”

The first session exhausted all of us.

The second gave me hope.

The third broke my heart.

“Do you know Matthew is here?” Hannah asked.

One blink.

“Do you know you are in a hospital?”

One blink.

“Are you frightened?”

One blink.

I had to look away.

Then Hannah asked the question that changed the room.

“Is there someone specific you are afraid of?”

One blink.

I moved closer without meaning to.

“Is it Celia?”

Bree’s whole face tightened.

One blink.

I sat down hard in the chair beside her bed.

Over the next week, progress came in painful inches. Eye tracking. Hand squeezes. One-blink, two-blink answers. Every tiny thing felt enormous.

Then Hannah switched to a letter board.

It took nearly forty minutes to get three words.

N

O

C

Then later:

T

R

U

C

K

Then after another long, grueling effort:

P

I

N

E

Those fragments stayed with me.

No C…

Truck…

Pine…

Ellen and I went back over everything.

Pine Coast Freight. Timber trust. Grant’s company shares. The crash.

The more we pulled, the tighter the knot became.

Meanwhile Celia escalated.

She started telling relatives I had manipulated a disabled woman into making responses. She sent texts accusing me of financial misconduct. She even left a voicemail saying Bree would be “better off somewhere neutral.”

That word neutral made me laugh out loud.

There is nothing neutral about a sister who sedates her sibling in secret and drains her care trust.

Then Mrs. Powell called.

It was the first time I had heard her voice since she handed me the house key.

“Can we meet?” she asked quietly. “There’s something I never wrote down.”

We met in a diner off Route 1.

She looked ten years older than the last time I saw her.

And when she sat down across from me, the first thing she said was, “Bree woke up once before.”
