Chapter 8 - THE STEP WE COULDN’T UNDO

With the draft guardianship petition in hand, Jo Ellen advised us to do two things immediately: file a formal report with Adult Protective Services and ask the court for exclusive possession of the marital home pending the hearing.

“Once APS opens a file, this stops being a family argument,” she said. “It becomes an elder exploitation matter.”

My mother looked sick at the thought.

“Will people know?”

“Eventually, some will.”

“Will Grant?”

“Immediately.”

That was the irreversible decision.

If we made that report, there would be no retreat to polite explanations and embarrassing misunderstandings. Grant would not quietly back away from the house, the money, or the story. He would fight.

Mom surprised me by answering before I could.

“File it.”

We also changed the locks after the judge granted temporary possession of the house to Marian until the hearing. That was not simple revenge. It was practical. Grant had a history of entering rooms where he was not wanted and acting as if presence proved ownership.

The cost came fast.

Grant’s attorney filed a response alleging I had assaulted him, manipulated my mother, and used my “military training to intimidate an elderly couple.” He requested denial of the long-term protective order and hinted at future action regarding my behavior.

The accusation itself did not frighten me.

Its effect on my mother did.

“See?” she said when we read it. “He always finds a way to make everything dirtier.”

That night she stood in her kitchen—our kitchen once, when my father was alive—touching the edge of the counter like she was reacquainting herself with the room.

“I almost didn’t send the code,” she admitted.

“Why?”

“Because if you came, it became real.”

I thought of the years I had spent walking into danger with a plan. Family does not work that way. Family arrives after danger has already rewritten the room.

The next morning, the bank called Jo Ellen.

They had found another pending document in their internal review.
