Chapter 8 - THE THINGS THEY FOUND IN THE PUMP HOUSE

Once the case shifted fully into evidence preservation, the pump house stopped being a story and became a scene.

Detectives photographed everything twice.

Then they went back for detail.

They found:

fibers from Claire’s coat on the mattress,

Daniel’s fingerprints on the inside latch and chain,

a stack of bottled water purchased at a gas station near Daniel’s route,

a handwritten grocery list in Rebecca’s notebook with the words “small yogurts / applesauce / crackers – for shed” crossed out,

and Claire’s phone beneath the front seat of Rebecca’s SUV, battery removed.

That last discovery mattered.

It destroyed Rebecca’s pose of ignorance in one stroke.

She hadn’t simply “believed Daniel was handling things.”

Claire’s property was in her vehicle.

There was also a legal pad page torn nearly in half, found wedged under the mattress.

Most of it was smudged.

But one line remained readable:

If the judge signs Monday, move them to Greenville by Tuesday.

Move them.

Plural.

Not just Ethan.

Not just Claire.

That piece bothered Detective Turner as much as it bothered me.

Turner brought it to the hospital herself.

“Do you recognize the handwriting?” she asked Claire.

Claire looked at the page for maybe three seconds.

“Rebecca.”

“Why?”

“She writes grocery lists in all caps.”

That sounded absurd until Turner nodded.

“She found comparison samples in the kitchen.”

The room went quiet.

Move them to Greenville by Tuesday.

Anna Mercer read it twice, then set the page down.

“That’s relocation planning,” she said. “If the adoption hearing had gone through, they intended to move fast.”

Claire went pale.

“With Ethan?”

“Yes.”

“And me?”

Anna did not answer immediately.

She didn’t have to.

By then we all understood what “move them” might mean.

A legally adopted child in another state.

A mother still hidden, discredited, or gone before she could contest anything.

Not a polished scheme.

Not genius.

Just brutal enough to work if no one interrupted it.

Ethan interrupted it with a dinner roll.

That thought stayed with me the rest of the night.

While the adults built lies, a hungry little boy with bread in his pocket had been the only one holding the truth together.
