Chapter 7 - The Story They Told About Me

Once the report was filed, things became less emotional and more precise.

The lender’s fraud department preserved the HELOC application records.

The e-signature originated from a laptop registered to Isabella.

The uploaded tax forms had been altered.

And the mobile notary confirmed she had been asked to attend a post-Christmas meeting to execute a transfer packet adding Michael and Isabella as joint owners while also authorizing the credit line.

“Who engaged you?” the investigator asked.

“Mrs. Holloway,” she said. “Isabella.”

Michael called twice that afternoon and left no message.

I did not call back.

Instead, I reviewed the emails Elaine subpoenaed from the preliminary loan package.

One, written by Isabella to the broker, made my stomach clench:

Dennis gets sentimental and confused. Michael handles things now. If we can get the docs signed right after the holiday, this will finally be behind us.

Sentimental and confused.

I had spent forty years paying taxes on time, raising one child, burying one wife, and learning how to survive my own loneliness without making it somebody else’s burden.

And in her private emails, I had been reduced to a mildly inconvenient old man who could be steered across the finish line if you chose the right week and enough flattering words.

Michael’s role was harder to measure, and that made it worse.

Isabella had written most of the emails.

Isabella had driven the loan.

But Michael had known enough to lie.

He had known enough to keep me away from Christmas.

He had known enough to let me keep paying while he played owner in front of other people.

That evening, I stood in my drafty kitchen and looked around the little house I had neglected while trying to finance his.

The windows needed weather stripping.

The wallpaper near the sink was peeling.

Maria’s old cookie tin still sat above the refrigerator.

For the first time in years, the place didn’t look pathetic to me.

It looked honest.
