Chapter 14 - CONSEQUENCES WITHOUT A CELEBRATION
Vanessa pleaded guilty to a felony arising from the assault.
The judge reviewed the medical evidence, witness accounts, her attempt to minimize what happened, and the broader context without allowing the courtroom to become a trial of every bad choice she had ever made.
She received a custodial sentence followed by supervised release and mandatory treatment requirements.
The old abandonment investigation ended less dramatically.
Prosecutors concluded parts of the historical conduct could not be proved to the same standard after five years, especially regarding intent at the moment Nora was left and the precise role each woman played. Mom still faced consequences for her current interference and false statements, but nobody manufactured a murder charge or an instant decades-long sentence just because the family story was ugly.
Reality was slower.
Messier.
More frustrating.
And more believable than revenge.
At sentencing, Vanessa asked for permission to make a statement.
I almost objected.
Then I let her.
She did not ask Nora to forgive her.
That surprised me.
Instead she said:
“I spent five years telling myself Claire stole my life because she got to raise the child I left. The truth is Claire gave Nora the life I refused to give her.”
Her voice broke.
“I hated a child for surviving me.”
I looked down at my hands.
There are sentences you wait years to hear and discover they do not produce the satisfaction you imagined.
That was one.
Afterward, Mom approached me in the courthouse hallway but stopped several feet away.
“Is Nora okay?”
“Yes.”
“Can I send her anything for Christmas?”
“Not yet.”
Mom nodded.
No argument.
That was new.
Everett was waiting near the elevators with Melissa.
He did not ask what happened inside.
He only held the elevator door.
People expected me to feel victorious that day.
I didn’t.
