Chapter 6 - The Price of Her Silence

Mom did not defend herself.

That almost made it worse.

“Because I was afraid.”

“Of Dad?”

“Of everything.”

After the fire, Whitmore Residential was heavily leveraged. Dad told her a public negligence investigation could destroy the company.

Hundreds of employees.

Their house.

Medical insurance.

My surgeries.

Sienna’s future.

“He said if I kept questioning him, I would destroy what was left of our family.”

“So you let him blame you?”

“Yes.”

“And you let me believe my scars embarrassed everyone?”

Mom covered her mouth.

That was the answer.

Her silence had not been passive.

It had shaped my entire childhood.

I left before finishing my coffee.

The relationship shift came from Sienna.

Dad had demanded that she return the documents she took.

She refused.

He froze her credit card.

Canceled a Hamptons trip.

Took away the Range Rover she had received for her birthday.

A month earlier, those consequences would have destroyed her.

She texted me:

I deserved worse for the party. I’m staying with Aunt Claire.

Our aunt lived ten minutes away.

Dad called Sienna manipulative.

Mom called her brave.

For the first time, they were openly on different sides.

Then Rebecca received the first portion of the fire department file.

The original investigator had documented:

Smoke detection in north residential wing disabled during renovation. Homeowner advised system should be restored before occupancy.

There was a handwritten notation below it.

Owner declined delay — family event scheduled.

Four days after that notation, the nursery burned.

Rebecca looked at me.

“The candle may still have been involved.”

“But?”

“But somebody was warned this wing wasn’t safe.”

Dad had spent fifteen years telling us one frightened mother caused everything.

The paperwork was beginning to tell a different story.
