Chapter 8 - THE KITCHEN REMODEL WAS A LIE

The bank fraud team moved faster than I expected.

By the following Monday, we had a clearer picture of where the $89,000 had gone.

Not to a kitchen remodel.

Not even mostly.

Only $11,400 had gone to an actual contractor who had redone Teresa’s backsplash and replaced two appliances. The rest went somewhere far uglier.

$28,000 to pay off Paola’s personal credit cards.

$17,500 into a trading app account.

$9,800 to cover missed payments on her luxury SUV lease.

$14,200 to settle a civil demand from an online boutique supplier she had failed to pay.

And the remaining funds had been split between Teresa’s overdue property taxes and a private loan Paola owed a man named Victor Marino.

Victor turned out to be a short-term lender with a history of suing defaulting borrowers.

So the “family Thanksgiving because Mom’s kitchen is being remodeled” story was only partly true.

The kitchen wasn’t under real renovation.

It was cosmetic work used to disguise why Teresa suddenly needed access to money and why Paola was desperate.

Alejandro sat in the hospital room reading the bank summary in silence.

Then he said, “She mortgaged our home.”

“Yes.”

“She used our baby’s room to hide the letters.”

“Yes.”

“And when you found one, she locked you outside to steal the rest.”

I nodded.

That was the sequence now.

And it fit too neatly with everything I remembered:

Paola asking about the camera.

Paola hovering near the nursery.

Paola smirking at the table as if she already knew the evening would end her way.

Teresa insisting we host.

Teresa leaving the room at the most convenient moment.

When Detective Holt interviewed Teresa again, she finally admitted the kitchen-remodel story was exaggerated.

She said she agreed to let Paola “borrow” Alejandro’s information because she thought it was temporary.

She said she did not know Paola would go so far.

But that defense kept shrinking under the facts.

Because she helped host the dinner in the apartment tied to the fraudulent loan.

She cooperated by text while Paola kept me outside.

And she stayed silent until she realized there was recorded proof.

Raymond did something none of us expected.

He moved out of Teresa’s house and into a Residence Inn two exits away.

“I’m not going to be in a home where my daughter steals from my son and my wife helps manage the clock,” he told Alejandro over the phone.

That was the first strong thing anyone in that family had done in years.
