Chapter 9 - THE FAMILY CHOSE SIDES BEFORE THE FACTS WERE FINISHED
The message leaked.
Not through police.
Through family.
My aunt somehow learned Tyler had texted Mom that Kristen hit him.
Within forty-eight hours, half my extended family had decided Kristen murdered my brother.
My cousin posted something vague online about “evil people hiding behind pregnancy.”
Another relative called Mom's situation “a mother's worst nightmare.”
Nobody mentioned Kristen being chained inside a shed.
Nobody mentioned the sleeping pill.
Nobody mentioned Tyler grabbing her throat.
They had found one sentence that made grief easier.
She hit me.
Mom's attorney issued a statement saying Diane had never intended physical harm and had been “trying unsuccessfully to manage an escalating domestic conflict.”
That wording enraged Kristen.
Manage.
As if Mom were a mediator instead of the woman who bought the lock with Tyler.
The preschool where Kristen worked placed her on paid administrative leave after parents began calling.
It wasn't punishment.
The director told her they needed time while the investigation continued.
Kristen still cried after hanging up.
Teaching was the one place in her life that had felt entirely hers.
Now my family had reached that too.
Meanwhile, detectives examined Tyler's phone more closely.
The message to Mom had been sent after Kristen struck his shoulder but before the fatal fall.
That fit her account.
Then a second message appeared as an unsent draft.
It contained only six words:
She's got the anchor almost loose
Tyler had noticed Kristen was close to freeing herself.
That changed the urgency of the encounter.
If she got loose, she could leave.
Call police.
Call me.
Expose everyone.
Then the medical examiner added a technical detail.
The fatal injury was to the back-right side of Tyler's skull.
There was no corresponding injury suggesting he'd been struck there with the wooden handle.
The blood pattern on the shelving corner was consistent with impact from a fall.
That supported Kristen.
It did not settle everything.
The district attorney still needed to decide whether the force she used was reasonable.
Mom, however, created a new problem for herself.
During a recorded interview, she said she had opened the shed Thursday morning and found Tyler already dead.
“Why didn't you call 911?”
Detective Vega asked.
Mom answered:
“I panicked.”
“Why didn't you release Kristen?”
“She killed my son.”
“Did Kristen tell you that?”
“No.”
“Did you see what happened?”
“No.”
“So you left a pregnant woman chained beside a dead body because you assumed she'd killed him?”
Mom began crying.
Then Vega asked:
“Why did you tell Ethan on Thursday evening that Tyler was out?”
Mom stopped.
The lie had nothing to do with shock at that point.
She had spent the entire day constructing a version of reality in which both Kristen and Tyler were absent.

And for the first time, investigators began asking whether Diane's purpose Thursday wasn't simply avoiding arrest.
It was buying time to decide which person inside that shed she intended to blame.
