Chapter 13 - LILY CAME IN THIRD

Months later, Lily entered another recitation competition.

She forgot one line.

For three seconds, she stood completely still under the stage lights.

My heart stopped.

Then she took a breath and kept going.

Third place.

Afterward she ran toward me holding a white ribbon.

“Daddy!”

I braced automatically.

“I forgot one line.”

“You did.”

“And I kept going!”

“You did.”

She held up the ribbon.

“Is third still good?”

I knelt.

“Did you do something hard?”

“Yes.”

“Did you practice?”

“Yes.”

“Did you enjoy it?”

She thought.

“Yes.”

“Then I’m proud.”

“That’s it?”

“That’s it.”

She grinned.

No Mason.

No ranking beyond whatever the contest itself needed.

No adult using her ribbon to construct her worth.

Mason came too.

He had skipped a science event that weekend because he wanted to watch Lily.

When she showed him the ribbon, he said:

“I got third at robotics once.”

Lily’s eyes widened.

“You?”

“Yeah.”

“What happened?”

“My robot drove backward.”

She laughed so hard she nearly dropped the certificate.

Two children who had spent years being arranged as winner and runner-up were suddenly just cousins.

That felt revolutionary.
