Chapter 12 - What Each of Us Had Been ProtectingChildren Services arranged a family team meeting before the next court date.

Gloria came.

Walt came separately.

Ian attended by video.

Adam sat beside me.

I had expected shouting.

Instead, the hardest moments were quiet.

Gloria began by saying she had saved Lizzy from Ian's chaos.

“You were high,” she told him. “You missed school pickup. You forgot meals. You don't get to judge how I kept her stable.”

Ian nodded.

“You're right about what I was.”

Mom hadn't expected agreement.

Then he added, “That doesn't make the closet okay.”

“She wasn't locked in there overnight.”

Dad looked down.

Mom saw him.

“Walt.”

He rubbed the side of his face.

“Don't.”

“Don't what?”

“Tell me what I remember.”

Denise didn't interrupt.

Neither did I.

Dad stared at the table.

“I heard her after midnight.”

Mom's chair moved.

“You heard pipes. That house—”

“I brought her crackers.”

“You brought her snacks because she manipulated you.”

Dad finally looked at her.

“I brought them because you wouldn't open the door.”

For the first time in my life, I watched my father contradict my mother without apologizing afterward.

Mom turned to me.

“This is what you wanted.”

“No.”

“You've resented me since Ian got sick.”

“I resented how you spoke to him. I didn't think you were dangerous.”

“And now?”

I looked at Lizzy's empty chair. Children were not brought into these meetings unless necessary.

“Now I think you cared more about being obeyed than knowing when you'd gone too far.”

Her face hardened.

“I was protecting her from becoming like her father.”

Ian flinched.

Dad whispered, “Gloria, she was six.”

Mom's eyes shone, but no tears fell.

Then I understood her fear.

If Lizzy needed punishment because she carried Ian's weakness, Gloria could still believe she had been protecting the child.

If Lizzy was simply a frightened little girl, then Gloria had to accept what she had actually done.

She chose the first story.

“I will not admit I abused my granddaughter.”

Denise closed her folder.

“Then the court will have to decide based on the evidence.”

Dad turned toward her.

“What if I testify?”

May you like

Mom stared at him.

And for the first time, he did not look away.
