Chapter 12 - My Brother Came Home

Ben flew in from Atlanta after the recording became part of the civil investigation.

He looked exactly like Dad around the eyes.

That irritated me immediately.

We sat in my kitchen after Megan took Lucy to a friend’s house.

“I screwed up,” Ben said.

“You were seventeen.”

“I drove drunk.”

“Yes.”

“I could’ve killed somebody.”

“Yes.”

He looked at me.

“I expected you to tell me it wasn’t my fault.”

“It was.”

Ben nodded.

“Good.”

We sat in silence.

He had spent twelve years believing Dad sacrificed the complaint because Ben deserved protection.

That guilt shaped his life more than I understood.

He stopped drinking completely at twenty-three.

Worked as a transportation safety engineer.

Never told anyone why.

“Dad should’ve called the police that night,” Ben said.

“You wanted that?”

“No.”

He smiled sadly.

“Seventeen-year-old me would’ve hated him. Thirty-six-year-old me thinks maybe consequences early are cheaper.”

That sounded like Dad’s entire HOA story.

The longer people postponed consequences, the more expensive they became.

I asked Ben the question that had bothered me most.

“Do you think Dad was a coward?”

He stared at the table.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because cowards don’t usually gather evidence against powerful neighbors.”

“Then what?”

“He got scared at the exact wrong time.”

I thought about Barbara.

Same description.

Dad protected Ben.

Barbara protected her marriage and investments.

The old HOA board protected peace.

Every person told themselves delay was temporary.

Years passed.

Ben looked toward Dad’s green folder.

“Do you hate him?”

“No.”

“Are you angry?”

“Very.”

“Both can happen.”

Yes.

May you like

They could.

That was probably the most useful thing my younger brother had ever taught me.
