Chapter 9 - The Video I Was Never Supposed to See

Claire Danton did not cooperate willingly.

A subpoena and a judge changed that.

Her firm produced project files relating to Victoria.

Most were ordinary public-relations materials.

Draft statements.

Media maps.

Risk analyses.

Then investigators found a folder labeled:

MARGARET — FINAL TESTIMONIAL ASSETS

Inside were twenty-three clips.

The first showed my mother at the kitchen island.

Victoria’s voice came from behind the camera.

“Margaret, tell me when Ethan last ate dinner with you.”

Mom answered honestly.

“Sunday.”

Victoria stopped recording.

Another clip.

“Tell me whether Ethan controls your money.”

“He pays for everything.”

Recording stopped.

Again.

“Do you ever feel abandoned?”

“When he works too much.”

Stop.

Again.

“Do you sometimes go hungry?”

“No.”

Stop.

Then later clips became uglier.

Mom looked thinner.

Her clothes worse.

Her voice weaker.

Victoria asked the same questions.

Again.

Again.

Again.

Until one clip finally produced:

“Sometimes I don’t eat.”

Victoria asked, “Because Ethan doesn’t provide food?”

Mom looked at the camera.

“No. Because you take it.”

Recording stopped immediately.

I stood up so fast my chair rolled backward.

Helen paused the video.

“Sit.”

“I’m fine.”

“You’re not.”

She was right.

I sat.

The last file was different.

Professionally edited.

Dark music.

Photos of me boarding private planes.

Magazine covers.

Construction projects.

Then my mother beside the kennel.

A title card:

THE BILLIONAIRE WHO FORGOT THE WOMAN WHO FED HIM

It was devastating.

Even knowing the truth, I felt the emotional force.

Then came an empty placeholder where Margaret’s final testimonial was supposed to go.

She had never given Victoria the sentence she needed.

That was why the abuse escalated.

Not because Victoria enjoyed cruelty alone.

Though she clearly had.

She needed a genuine-looking broken woman to blame me.

Claire’s production notes contained a planned release timeline.

Friday morning: anonymous leak.

Friday afternoon: “concerned family source” confirms.

Monday: board pressure.

Tuesday: Helix acquisition approach.

Wednesday:

VHC settlement communication.

Victoria’s divorce leverage and Adrian’s corporate strategy were synchronized.

Then Helen opened the last document.

A private memorandum between Victoria and Adrian.

At the top:

PROJECT MERCY

Three pages later, the single biggest twist in the story finally became clear.

And it changed what I thought Victoria had been trying to take from me.
