Chapter 11 - THE THING MOM FINALLY ADMITTED

After the hearing, Mom asked to speak to me without Michael and Sarah.

Rebecca insisted her lawyer remain nearby.

We sat in a mediation room.

For several minutes Mom stared at her hands.

Then she said:

“I knew what Robert intended.”

“I know.”

“I didn’t agree.”

“That isn’t the same as having authority to ignore it.”

She winced.

“You always talk like a lawyer now.”

“No. I talk like someone who finally reads before accepting what you say.”

That silenced her.

Then I asked the question I had carried since childhood.

“Why?”

She looked at me.

“Why what?”

“Why was Michael always entitled to more? Why did Sarah always need more? Why was I always told to understand?”

Mom’s face softened in a way that nearly made me angry.

“Because you could handle yourself.”

That was it.

The whole family system in one sentence.

Michael failed loudly.

Help him.

Sarah panicked visibly.

Help her.

Elena survives.

Give Elena less.

I stared at her.

“You punished me for being dependable.”

“I never thought of it that way.”

“You didn’t have to.”

She started crying.

I did not comfort her immediately.

That might sound cruel.

It wasn’t.

For once, Mom needed to remain in the discomfort long enough to understand it.

Then she admitted something worse.

The hospital transfers.

She had authorized the $25,000 to Michael and $18,000 to Sarah.

Dad had explicitly said no two days earlier.

Mom transferred the money anyway because both siblings were “in trouble.”

The $40,000 was different.

Michael told her Dad had changed his mind.

She wanted to believe him.

So she sent it.

“I thought Robert would forgive me.”

“He was dying.”

“I know.”

“He documented it because he knew he might not have time to stop you again.”

Mom covered her face.

That was the first moment I saw her not as the villain at the center of our family, but as a woman whose definition of motherhood had become indistinguishable from rescuing the children who demanded rescue.

It explained her.

It did not excuse her.
