Chapter 13 - THE HOUSE BECAME LOUDER

The mansion changed after the investigation.

Not dramatically.

Nobody transformed it into a daycare center.

Alessandro remained a private man who preferred quiet.

But quiet stopped being policy.

Employees used the front hallway sometimes.

Music appeared in the kitchen.

Someone complained about a malfunctioning dryer directly through the new system and received a replacement without three layers of approval.

The first time Alessandro heard two staff members arguing about schedules within earshot of his study, he almost opened the door and told them to take it elsewhere.

Then he stopped.

Ordinary problems sounded surprisingly healthy.

He began eating lunch in the kitchen once a week.

Not as some theatrical exercise in equality.

Mostly because his doctor told him his blood pressure was terrible and the kitchen served less salt than the dining room.

Still, conversations happened.

He learned that Patrick the gardener had three grandchildren.

Maria in housekeeping wanted to buy a condominium.

His driver hated opera despite pretending otherwise for nine years.

Information he could have known at any point.

He simply hadn't asked.

Sophia began prerequisite courses at a community college.

She found part-time work at a pediatric clinic's front office.

The pay was lower initially.

She kept it.

Emma entered preschool.

One afternoon she arrived at the mansion carrying a paper bag.

“For you.”

Inside was a white child's T-shirt.

Across it, Emma had drawn a huge brown circle with washable marker.

Alessandro stared.

“What is this?”

“A stain.”

Sophia covered her mouth to keep from laughing.

Emma beamed.

“You don't gotta clean it.”

For several seconds Alessandro could not speak.

Then he laughed.

A real laugh.

The kind that hurt his ribs.

He kept the shirt.

Not because it was sentimental.

He told everyone that.

Nobody believed him.

Then something unexpected happened.

Sophia received a settlement proposal connected to the employment case.

Significant money.

Confidentiality clause.

No admission of liability from the Moretti household entities.

Her lawyer told her it was financially sensible.

Sophia asked Alessandro whether he wanted her to sign.

He stared at her.

“Why are you asking me?”

“Because your lawyers offered it.”

“My lawyers are doing their jobs.”

“What do you want?”

Old Alessandro would have known immediately.

Silence.

Closure.

No public testimony.

Now he said:

“I want you to make the choice that lets you live with yourself.”

Sophia searched his face.

“You'd be okay if I testified publicly?”

“No.”

She blinked.

He continued.

“But being uncomfortable isn't the same as being wronged.”

Sophia smiled faintly.

That was the first time Alessandro understood that changing had a practical cost.

Not everybody would protect his reputation while he did it.
