Chapter 11 - THE TRUTH DIDN’T REPAIR MICHAEL

Michael came back five days later.
He had seen Ruth.
He did not describe the meeting.
I did not ask.
Our divorce mediation continued as scheduled.
He looked different.
Not transformed.
Less defended.
He signed routine paperwork without argument.
Then he said:
“Ruth knew about me.”
I looked up.
“She kept photographs.”
His voice cracked.
“School pictures. Newspaper clippings. My architecture awards.”
I felt something painful for him.
Not enough to erase us.
Enough to remember he was human.
“She says Hattie sent some of them.”
That surprised me.
Maybe Hattie had not simply stolen him and erased Ruth.
Maybe she had lived inside contradictions too.
Love.
Possession.
Fear.
Guilt.
The truth had become less satisfying and more realistic.
Then Michael said:
“She tried to get me back.”
“When?”
“Twice.”
The first attempt came after Ruth left treatment.
Warren's attorneys opposed her.
A court maintained the existing guardianship while experts argued over her condition.
Later, according to Ruth, Warren offered financial support if she stopped challenging custody.
She refused.
Then threats began.
Eventually she disappeared again.
Grace was born years later under Ruth's new identity.
“Was Hattie involved?”
Michael looked away.
“Ruth says Hattie helped Dad—Warren—keep me.”
He corrected himself awkwardly.
Warren was grandfather.
But the old family structure was breaking faster than language could follow.
“She also says Hattie sent her updates secretly.”
That was harder.
Villains are easier when they never hesitate.
Hattie may have participated in taking Michael.
She may also have spent years letting Ruth know he was alive.
Both could be true.
Michael finally asked:
“Did you know about Serena before the chain?”
“No.”
“Would it have mattered?”
“Yes.”
He nodded.
“I ended it.”
“I know.”
“I’m sorry.”
I believed the apology.
I did not reconsider the divorce.
Some apologies arrive after the structure they could have saved is already gone.
Then he looked at me.
“Do you hate me?”
I thought about the slap.
The investigation into Donna.
The affair.
The lies.
“No.”
His eyes filled.
“That’s worse.”
Maybe.
May you like
But hatred would have kept him central.
I wanted my life back.
