Chapter 8 - MY MOTHER’S SECOND LIFE

Mara Evans had not only been a French teacher.
Before I was born, she worked as a contract interpreter for maritime-law firms.
That was how she met Elias.
He was investigating Moretti customs irregularities.
She translated witness interviews.
Eventually they fell in love.
Then the investigation became dangerous.
Felix Calder discovered someone was copying records.
Domenico Moretti wanted the matter contained.
Elias wanted federal authorities involved.
Mara did not trust one central evidence file.
So she distributed it.
Different languages.
Different jurisdictions.
Different custodians.
No one person could destroy the whole record.
Then she became pregnant.
Everything changed.
“She stopped?”
I asked Samuel.
“No.”
That hurt more.
Mom continued building the system while pregnant with me.
Then after I was born.
Elias disappeared when I was eight months old.
Mara told everyone he abandoned us.
Why?
“She believed the people searching for him would lose interest in a woman he had supposedly left.”
“Did she know whether he was alive?”
“For a while.”
I froze.
“Mom knew?”
Samuel looked uncomfortable.
“There was indirect contact for several years.”
My chest tightened.
“How many?”
“Four.”
I stood.
Rachel reached for me.
I moved away.
My mother had let me grow up believing my father vanished before I was born.
He had been alive until I was at least four.
“Did he ask about me?”
“Yes.”
“Did he ask to see me?”
Samuel paused.
“Yes.”
That was a betrayal I could not explain away with fear.
Maybe contact was dangerous.
Maybe Mara had reasons.
She still made the choice for all three of us.
Then Samuel handed me one final page.
Mara’s handwriting.
HANNAH MUST NEVER KNOW SHE IS THE KEY UNTIL SHE HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE.
I laughed.
“That's convenient.”
Rachel understood.
“You weren't given the right to refuse while she was training you.”
May you like
Exactly.
Mom had built protection around consent she had already violated.
