Chapter 13 - THE COST OF MAKING IT OFFICIALReal accountability turned out to be paperwork, depositions, and a For Sale sign.

CPS closed its part with findings that the adults had exercised profoundly poor judgment and that Charlotte’s conduct toward Ada appeared intentional and emotionally harmful. The police matter moved more slowly, but the park records, Peter’s statement, and Ada’s account kept it alive far beyond the “family misunderstanding” Charlotte had hoped for.

The cottage went on the market in late August.

Seeing the photos online made me cry unexpectedly—the striped umbrella, the porch swing, the little upstairs room where Ada used to line up shells on the windowsill. Losing a place can still hurt even when keeping it would mean feeding a lie.

Hannah filed for legal separation after uncovering more of Frederick’s debt.

Peter rented a small condo while the cottage sale and the marriage both hung in midair.

Charlotte started calling cousins and church friends with a revised version in which Philip had “turned against his parents over money.” It worked on some people. Not many. Enough to remind me that public truth is never total.

The best shift happened quietly.

Ada started sleeping without the transit card in my dresser drawer.

Then one morning she asked if she could ride with a friend’s family to a birthday party across town.

A small thing.

A giant one.

Philip, who had once dismissed therapy as something he’d “think about if life got dramatic,” enrolled us all in family counseling with a woman who specialized in child trauma and attachment.

By October, Ada could say the words they made me get out without freezing halfway through the sentence.

That mattered more to me than whatever listing price the cottage fetched.

Still, the financial conclusion mattered too.

The sale proceeds covered the lender balance, repaid the unauthorized card-linked obligations, and left almost nothing for Peter and Charlotte after closing costs and debts.

Which was exactly right.

You do not get to end a summer with the house and the innocence intact after using both against a child.
