Chapter 10 - He Never Planned to Leave Me

The message was seven months old.

Brandon had sent it at 11:43 p.m.

Once the duplex closes I put every dollar back. Elena never knows. Then the profit is ours and I finally bring something to the table.

I read it three times.

Not because I misunderstood it.

Because I understood it perfectly.

Brandon had never been planning to take the money and disappear.

He had never intended to end our marriage.

He had intended to keep me.

He planned to use nearly all our savings without my permission, return the principal after the property sold, keep his share of the profit hidden with Lucas, and let me spend the rest of my life believing our marriage had never been at risk.

The theft was temporary in his mind.

So was the lie.

That was how he had justified everything.

Daniel reconstructed the entire timeline.

Fourteen months earlier, Lucas found the duplex and needed private capital.

Brandon knew I would refuse another large family bailout.

He transferred the first $40,000 anyway.

When the project needed more, he sent more.

To explain the investment to Lucas and Diane, he said the money came from Margaret’s house sale.

At that point Mom had not even moved in with us.

Brandon was using the existence of her home equity as cover before he had asked her for a dollar.

Three months later, my father died.

Mom sold the bungalow.

She moved into our condo.

Suddenly the woman whose money Brandon had invented was living ten feet from his desk.

He tried to make his lie real by asking her to invest $100,000.

She refused.

He asked again.

She refused again.

Then she saw the North Shore folder.

She began asking questions.

The project was still not ready to sell.

The savings account was almost empty.

Brandon needed her out of the house before she told me enough to make me check the bank.

So on the morning of the assault, he withdrew $10,500 from our joint account and took it directly to the West Allis property.

At 10:26 a.m., Lucas paid the flooring contractor.

Hours later, Brandon went home and claimed the exact same $10,500 had disappeared from his desk.

He accused Mom.

He hit her.

And he gave me an ultimatum he expected me to fail.

That was the part I had misunderstood most.

He had expected me to choose him.

Every earlier clue rearranged itself.

His sudden hostility after Mom refused the loan.

His obsession with her entering the office.

His use of her initials in North Shore’s ledger.

His text saying she “wasn’t innocent.”

The exact cash amount.

The threat that I would regret filing.

He had not been trying to end our marriage.

He had been trying to force Margaret out so the marriage could continue under his control.

Claire closed the file.

“There’s one more message.”

I looked at her.

She read it aloud.

It was from Brandon to Lucas, sent two days before the assault.

If Maggie keeps pushing, I’ll make Elena choose. She always chooses the marriage.

That sentence hurt more than the missing money.

Because for seven years, he had mistaken my loyalty for predictability.

And I had helped teach him to.
