Chapter 11 - THE REPORTS I FINALLY FILED

Once the full picture was clear, everything moved faster.

Reed filed the divorce petition the same day he amended it to include cruelty, financial fraud, and reimbursement claims. He also requested a temporary injunction preventing Teresa or Mauricio from refinancing again, selling the house, or transferring any interest while the case was pending.

Then we went to the police.

I carried a folder that felt too heavy for paper: photographs of my face, the text messages, forged signatures, the deed amendment, bank summaries, and the gift letter tied to my parents’ money.

The detective who took my statement didn’t interrupt much.

When I finished, he looked at the loan packet and said, “This is bigger than a domestic complaint.”

He was right.

By the end of the week, reports had been opened for assault, forgery, and financial exploitation. The bank launched a formal fraud review. Reed also sent preservation letters so no one could claim records had been lost.

Mauricio’s messages turned uglier once he realized I had gone to police.

You’re ruining all of us.

My mother is old.

You know I never meant to hurt you.

If you push this, everyone loses the house.

Teresa didn’t text at first.

Then one message came just after midnight:

Without us, you would have had nothing.

I stared at the screen for a long time.

Then I blocked her.

That weekend, my father helped me make a list of everything I had paid for over two years. Groceries were one thing. Utility overpayments were another. But then came the larger items: the roof, washing machine, medical bills, debt payments, and money directly linked to the refinance disbursements.

Line after line, the marriage I thought I had entered out of love translated into a ledger of extraction.

Still, something inside me had changed.

For the first time, I was no longer asking whether I had overreacted.

A woman with a swollen cheek and forged signatures on a house deed does not need to argue herself into believing she was harmed.

She needs to keep going.

So I did.
