Chapter 12 - Grace Came Home Before I Did

Grace left the NICU before I finished rehabilitation.

That was both wonderful and humiliating.

I wanted to carry my daughter out myself.

Instead, Sarah helped arrange for my older cousin Marissa to stay with me temporarily, and hospital staff taught us feeding, sleep safety, follow-up care, and how to recognize the respiratory warning signs common in premature infants.

I practiced holding Grace while seated.

Then standing.

Then walking short distances.

The first time I carried her six steps without assistance, I cried.

Maribel pretended not to notice.

“You have twelve tomorrow.”

Grace came home to my father’s house.

Not mine.

The kitchen where I had been attacked remained sealed for parts of the investigation and then became unbearable even after police released it.

I did not want my daughter’s first nights under a roof where her father once planned to use her birth as leverage.

So Sarah helped me petition for temporary exclusive possession and later arrange maintenance on the property while the divorce and criminal cases proceeded.

Julian was barred from entering.

One afternoon, Sarah asked whether I wanted to sell.

I said no immediately.

Then realized I didn’t know why.

The house was my father’s last physical gift.

But gifts can become prisons too if grief decides they must never change.

So I waited.

Therapy helped.

Not because it taught me to forgive.

Because it helped me separate objects from people.

The stove did not attack me.

The kitchen did not betray me.
