Chapter 6 - THE DINNER GUEST WHO STARTED TALKING

The first non-police witness to truly break the case open was not the lender.

It was Marcus’s friend Connor Blake.

Connor had been at the dinner.

He had brought a bottle of bourbon and his own guilt.

Three weeks after my rescue, he asked to meet Leah with counsel present. Dana let me sit in on part of it because my account could help place the timeline.

Connor was pale and humiliated.

He admitted that Marcus had been acting strangely for months. Drinking too much. Ranting about how marriage had become “a hostage situation run by inheritances.” Saying he was entitled to more than I was willing to give. Bragging that once the baby came, “Rachel won’t have options.”

Connor had thought Marcus was venting.

Then on the dinner night, he arrived early and heard a thud from below the kitchen floor.

He asked about it.

Marcus laughed and said the old house settled weirdly.

Later, when the neighbor asked why my chair was empty, Marcus said I was “visiting family before the baby comes.”

Connor remembered that because he himself had helped Marcus say the same thing seven years earlier about another woman.

My skin prickled.

Leah didn’t move.

“What woman?”

Connor swallowed.

“His ex-fiancée. Ava Nolan.”

He said Marcus and Ava had broken up messily. Ava disappeared for a while. Diane told people she’d gone to stay with family because she was unstable and using pills. Connor hadn’t questioned it then.

“Did you ever see her after that?”

“No.”

“Did Marcus ever mention locking her up?”

Connor looked sick.

“Not directly. But one night he joked that some women only learn when there’s nowhere to run.”

That wasn’t enough to charge anything new.

It was enough to dig.

Ryan reopened the old local report. Ava had never actually been listed as a missing person because her mother told police she eventually called from out of state. There had, however, been an ambulance run from Marcus’s house eight years earlier tied to “accidental lacerations from broken glass” involving an unnamed adult female who refused transport.

The address matched our house.

My house now.

Leah asked Ryan to track Ava.

At the same time, Connor gave them one more useful detail.

Marcus had said he was “almost free” because once the baby came and “the paperwork” cleared, everything would belong where it should have from the beginning.

He also told Connor not to worry about my absence because “the old woman has it handled.”

The old woman.

Diane.

Every path kept returning to her.

That evening, after the interview, Lena sat across from me at her kitchen table while Sophie slept in a portable crib beside us.

“Do you want the truth?”

“I’m terrified of it.”

She nodded.

“Good. Because I think there’s more.”

I knew she was right.

And for the first time, I stopped seeing the cage as the worst thing Marcus had ever done.

It was only the worst thing he had done to me.
