Chapter 9 - The Lunch Menu on Daniel’s Calendar

The deeper Mara looked, the less lunch resembled lunch.

Daniel’s calendar entry read:

12:00 Mom — Bellini’s

Then beneath it:

12:30 RN

1:00 Eastport call

1:30 courier

The roast chicken was camouflage.

The meeting had stages.

Gloria arrives.

Family atmosphere established.

Richard witnesses documents.

Eastport Private Lending confirms execution.

Courier takes originals.

Daniel expected the transaction to be moving before dessert.

He had even asked Gloria what wine to serve.

She replied:

Not too much. Claire needs to be clear enough to sign.

That message made me physically sick.

Then another detail emerged.

A week before the assault, Daniel tried to get me to sign something at breakfast.

He called it an “insurance beneficiary update.”

I remembered pushing the packet back.

“I’m late. Leave it in my office.”

It disappeared.

The recovered draft contained an LLC operating agreement.

My signature page would have made me a 49% non-managing member of CDG Family Holdings.

Daniel remained managing member.

At the time I never saw those pages.

What if I had signed?

Mara answered carefully.

“We’d analyze exactly what was executed. But yes, it could have complicated the situation.”

I felt stupid.

Then angry for feeling stupid.

Fraud works best when the target is made to feel foolish for trusting ordinary routines.

Daniel had not asked me to sign a deed while wearing a ski mask.

He had mixed papers into the normal administration of marriage.

Insurance.

Taxes.

Estate planning.

Things spouses sign.

The financial investigation also showed Eastport never approved the final loan.

Its underwriter remained concerned about source of title and Daniel’s debt load.

Even if I had transferred the property, the lender might still have declined.

That meant Daniel was risking our marriage—and eventually committing violence—for money he was not guaranteed to receive.

Gloria’s investment might still have been lost.

Harbor Bridge might still have collapsed.

The whole scheme was built around desperation, not certainty.

Then Eastport produced one last email.

Its loan officer asked Daniel:

Why is spouse not copied?

Daniel wrote:

She prefers I handle finances. Signing is scheduled.

I had spent six years handling nearly every major household financial decision myself.

Daniel knew that.

He needed the lender to believe the opposite.

By now we understood what he wanted.

But Part 10 would reveal something worse.

The confrontation over Gloria moving in had not merely happened the night before the signing.

Daniel and Gloria had chosen that night on purpose.
