Chapter 2 - The Transfer I Had Never Seen
The screenshots showed four transfers.
$12,500.
$18,000.
$27,500.
Then $46,000.
All moving from an account I recognized into:
MONROE STRATEGIC CONSULTING LLC.
I had never heard of it.
The source account was our home-equity line.
I called our bank the next morning.
The representative confirmed the HELOC balance had increased by $104,000 over four months.
Ethan had authority to draw from it.
So did I.
He had not forged my signature to access the money.
That almost made it worse.
He had used legitimate marital access while deliberately hiding the withdrawals.
“What was it for?” I asked.
The representative could not tell me.
I found the LLC through state filings.
Formed five months earlier.
Manager:
Ethan Monroe.
Registered address:
A Nashville office suite.
Grace’s birthday had been Friday.
On Monday morning, I met with family-law attorney Natalie Chen.
She read every screenshot.
“Do not move money simply because you’re angry.”
“I wasn’t planning to.”
“Good.”
“Can we stop him?”
“We can address preservation of marital assets through proper process. First we understand what this is.”
Then she tapped Lauren’s message.
Once the money clears.
“What does your husband do?”
“Regional sales executive for Meridian Mobility Systems.”
“What does Lauren do?”
“Chief commercial officer.”
“Is the company being sold?”
I stopped.
Ethan had mentioned “strategic changes.”
Nothing more.
Natalie searched public business filings and industry reports.
Meridian was negotiating a private acquisition.
Not announced publicly yet.
If the deal closed, certain senior executives would receive change-of-control bonuses and accelerated equity payouts.
Potentially substantial.
I went cold.
“How substantial?”
“We need Ethan’s plan documents.”
That afternoon another screenshot from Grace became important.
A calendar entry on Ethan’s phone:
NASHVILLE — FINAL DOCS / L.P. / CLOSE
The “leadership summit” was not a summit.
It was closing preparation.
Ethan was taking Viagra to Nashville because Lauren would be there.
