Chapter 11 - Caleb Said Love Should Count for Something

Caleb requested one mediated conversation before the divorce progressed further.

I agreed.

Lawyers present.

No private meeting.

He looked thinner.

No expensive jacket.

No polished confidence.

Just a man who had finally discovered that being able to explain himself did not mean anyone had to accept the explanation.

“I loved you.”

I surprised him.

“I believe you.”

His eyes filled.

Then I continued.

“That makes it worse.”

He stared.

“If you never loved me, you’re just a con man. Simpler story.”

“Mara—”

“But you loved me and still decided that love made my property negotiable.”

“I was trying to save the company.”

“You kidnapped me.”

“I panicked.”

“For four days?”

Silence.

“You drugged me.”

“I never wanted to hurt the baby.”

“You restrained his mother in an industrial freezer.”

“I knew the temperature was controlled.”

I laughed.

Even his apology had engineering.

Risk calculations.

Acceptable damage.

He put both hands over his face.

“Mom raised us believing the Bennetts stole from us.”

“You were thirty-eight years old.”

“I know.”

“You knew I had a lawyer.”

“Yes.”

“You knew I wanted a divorce.”

“Yes.”

“You knew I had the right to leave.”

His voice dropped.

“Yes.”

“Then why?”

He looked at me.

“Because once you filed, everything was over.”

There it was.

Not merely the marriage.

Everything.

Company.

Legacy.

Bennett assets.

His mother’s expectations.

His affair.

His status.

Control.

“So you decided my freedom was too expensive.”

He started crying.

I did not comfort him.

Then he said:

“Please don’t take my son.”

I rested both hands on my belly.

“I am not going to use a child the way your family used me.”

He looked relieved too soon.

“The court will decide whatever contact is safe and legally appropriate.”

His face fell.

“I’m his father.”

“Yes.”

I stood.

“That is a relationship.”

Then I looked at him one final time.

May you like

“It is not ownership.”

That became the last private sentence I ever gave Caleb Hawthorne.
