Chapter 1 - FIFTY-TWO MISSED CALLS

By the time I finally answered Bradley’s fifty-second call, the ER nurse had already cut my jeans off, cleaned the blood from my calf, and warned me that I was going to need stitches and a cast.

“Why are you ignoring me?” Bradley snapped the second the line connected. “You broke your leg, not your hands. Order an Uber and get home right now. My mother needs you to make dinner.”

I lay back against the stiff hospital pillow and stared at the fluorescent lights above me.

“My leg is broken,” I said slowly. “I’m in the emergency room.”

He gave a short, cold laugh.

“And today is the family gathering. The house is full of relatives. My mother’s husband just died, there are guests everywhere, and you promised you’d cook. Stop behaving like the entire world has to stop for you.”

The doctor paused while wrapping my leg.

The nurse turned her head and stared at me.

I should have felt ashamed that strangers were hearing my husband talk to me that way.

Instead, something inside me went still.

For three years, I had cleaned up after Bradley’s carelessness, funded his emergencies, hosted his relatives, and kept pretending his cruelty came from stress, grief, bad timing—anything except the truth.

But hearing him demand a hot meal while I lay in a hospital bed with a fractured leg and eight stitches in my calf stripped the last bit of illusion away.

“Listen carefully,” I said. “I’m done serving your family. I’m done being your wife. I’m filing for divorce.”

Silence.

Then his voice exploded through the speaker.

“You wouldn’t dare. If you divorce me, I’m taking the condo, the SUV, and every dollar in our joint account. Let’s see how a jobless freeloader survives with a crippled leg.”

I closed my eyes.

He still thought he understood exactly who I was.

He had no idea how badly he had miscalculated.
