Chapter 10 - The Partner My Mother Was Really Afraid Of

Laura spent four days tracing the reference number.

What she found changed the entire story.

Northstar Clinical Group had not existed under that name when my mother wrote the memo.

Its predecessor was a regional medical-supply distributor called Western Clinical Logistics.

Victor Reynolds had secretly owned an interest in Western through a family trust while simultaneously serving as my father’s business partner.

Years earlier, Donovan Medical Apparel sold products through Western.

Victor earned money on both sides of the transactions.

Elaine discovered it.

That was why she restructured the company.

That was why she insisted I receive thirty-five percent.

That was why she told Rosa and Miguel to preserve certain records.

Three clues from the beginning suddenly meant something different.

Victor’s urgency about acquiring my shares was not merely about rescuing a “bankrupt” company.

My mother’s dying warning was not vague maternal anxiety.

And Jasper’s repeated claim that my father’s business problems were “old family baggage” had conveniently kept me from asking what those old problems actually were.

The twist went deeper.

Jackson knew Victor once had the side interest.

He confronted him years ago.

Victor claimed he had divested.

My father accepted that explanation because breaking with Victor then would have endangered the factory’s main distribution channel.

“You knew?” I asked.

Dad’s face tightened.

“I knew about Western. I did not know he retained beneficial interests through another trust.”

“Mom suspected it.”

“Yes.”

“And you stayed in business with him.”

“I thought I had contained the risk.”

I stood from Laura’s conference table.

For weeks, I had been rebuilding my father into the innocent parent Jasper stole from me.

Now that simple version broke too.

Jackson had not betrayed me like Jasper had.

But he had concealed a dangerous compromise because admitting it would require acknowledging he had prioritized the company over Elaine’s warning.

“Mom wasn’t only protecting me from Victor,” I said.

Dad looked down.

“No.”

She had created my voting block because she did not trust either man to make the right decision when the company was under pressure.

My inheritance was not a gift of wealth.

It was a check on power.

And now everyone expected me to use it.
