Chapter 7 - THE CAMERA DAVID FORGOT WAS MIRRORED

David knew about the main security system.
He tried to erase parts of it after I left.
That created another problem for him.
The camera service mirrored footage to an off-site corporate security archive because I had once stored sensitive prototypes at home.
Deleting the residential copy did not delete the mirror.
Investigators recovered months.
Most of it was useless.
Deliveries.
Staff.
Nurses.
David walking hallways.
Jessica entering.
Me disappearing slowly.
Then the kitchen footage.
Not detailed enough to show exactly what David added to anything.
But patterns mattered.
On multiple occasions, after staff prepared my food, David dismissed them.
He moved the tray outside the direct camera angle.
Returned minutes later.
Fed me personally.
Medical records showed several of my worst episodes occurred after those meals.
Correlation.
Not enough alone.
Then one clip captured him removing a small container from a locked cabinet only he used.
Police obtained the cabinet under warrant.
Inside were prescription medications, supplements, and miscellaneous compounds.
Most ordinary.
One item produced results relevant to the toxicology findings.
The exact evidentiary and scientific interpretation would later be argued by experts.
For me, the only part that mattered was this:
David possessed something consistent with what had harmed me.
He had exclusive control over the locked cabinet.
He repeatedly handled my meals privately.
And he lied when police initially asked whether he stored anything unusual there.
Probable cause grew.
So did the case.
He was arrested several days later on serious charges while the investigation continued.
Not at my funeral.
Not beside a coffin.
There would be no coffin.
That was the first plan of his that failed.
His attorney issued a statement:
David Mercer categorically denied harming his wife.
The defense suggested:
medical misinterpretation,
environmental exposure,
staff contamination,
and possible involvement by someone with motive and access.
They did not name Jessica publicly.
They did not need to.
Reporters did.
Photographs appeared online.
DYING BILLIONAIRE’S HUSBAND AND MISTRESS UNDER SCRUTINY
Jessica lost two clients in forty-eight hours.
Her company received threats.
She called Detective Bishop through her attorney.
“He’s doing it.”
“Doing what?”
“Making them look at me.”
That was when she remembered a conversation from months earlier.
David had asked strange questions.
“If something happened to Evelyn while you were in the house, could anyone prove where you were?”
Jessica thought he was fantasizing about secrecy.
Another time:
“Always use your own access code. Never mine.”
She thought he was protecting himself from evidence of the affair.
Another:
“Keep your receipts.”
She thought he was being controlling.
Now those instructions looked different.
But memory after accusation is dangerous.
Investigators did not build the case from interpretation alone.
They went back to records.

That was when the affair stopped looking like a hidden romance.
On David’s computer, it looked like an evidence project.
