Chapter 11 - Mark Said He Never Touched Me

Mark’s deposition lasted seven hours.
He remained calm almost the entire time.
“I never threatened Sarah.”
“No?”
“No.”
“You drafted the honeymoon documents?”
“Yes.”
“You knew your father and David intended to obtain her signature aboard the ship?”
“I expected discussion.”
“Did you know about the bat?”
“No.”
That may have been true.
Then Grace asked:
“When ship security arrived, why did you immediately tell them Sarah had combat training?”
Mark paused.
“Relevant safety information.”
“Why had you brought her military medical documents on your honeymoon cruise?”
“It was not my honeymoon.”
The room went silent.
Exactly.
He had boarded someone else’s honeymoon carrying paperwork designed to explain why the bride might not be credible.
Mark’s central defense was simple:
“I never touched her.”
He seemed to believe morality ended at his fingertips.
He did not swing the bat.
He drafted the trust.
He did not forge every record.
He circulated altered summaries.
He did not order me to sit down.
He stood between me and the cabin phone.
The legal consequences of those acts would depend on evidence, jurisdiction, intent, professional rules, and what prosecutors could prove.
But personally, I needed no verdict.

Mark had spent his adult life believing paperwork could distance him from harm.
He eventually learned that a clean suit does not make dirty instructions clean.
