Chapter 6 - MY FATHER’S NAME WASN’T THE ONLY ONE IN THE ROOM

Edward Whitmore and I had not been estranged exactly. Our relationship was more precise than that.

We loved each other with too much structure around it.

He built a global company out of engines, logistics, and disciplined risk. I spent my adult life proving I was more than his heir, and he let me, sometimes too completely.

On the third morning after the assault, he came to the penthouse kitchen while I was reading the medical report and placed a cup of black coffee beside me.

“You should eat,” he said.

“You sound like counsel.”

“Counsel learned it from me.”

Then he told me what I had not known.

Two years earlier, Cross Biodyne had nearly collapsed during a disastrous acquisition. Whitmore private capital had quietly stepped in through layered instruments and guaranties at my request because I asked my father not to let Nathaniel fail publicly before he had the chance to become the man I believed he could become.

I set down the report.

“You never told me the structure stayed in place this long.”

“Because you asked for normal.”

“And you gave it to me by secretly keeping my husband afloat?”

My father did not defend himself immediately. That, more than anything, told me he knew the answer.

The revelation shifted our relationship in one harsh motion. He had tried to honor my wish for independence and in doing so helped preserve the illusion Nathaniel used to belittle me.

At the same time, another relationship shifted too.

The house manager, Elena, agreed to provide a statement. So did Nathaniel’s longtime executive assistant, who admitted Nathaniel had asked repeated questions over the last month about “how fast signatures could be notarized in-house” and “whether private trust schedules become effective immediately if attached.”

He had not been improvising.

He had been studying.

Late that afternoon, the tabloids went live.

Nathaniel’s team leaked that I was unstable, jealous, and angry about infertility.

For a few hours, it worked well enough to make me sick.

Then a message arrived from the LAPD.

Chief Harris requested clarification.

Nathaniel had used his name in my entrance hall.

Harris had never authorized anything.

He wanted that stated clearly on the record.
