Chapter 7 - Grant Finally Lost His Smile

Claire confronted Grant in Maya’s office.

Not privately.

Not at a restaurant.

Not anywhere he controlled.

Grant arrived with his lawyer and the same expensive calm he wore at the gym.

Maya placed the audit report between them.

“Ms. Whitmore’s electronic signature file was uploaded through Hale Capital infrastructure associated with Jenna Price.”

Grant read it.

His face didn’t change.

Claire watched him.

“Did you know?”

“No.”

“Did Jenna have access to my signature?”

“I don’t know.”

“She was sleeping with you.”

His lawyer interrupted.

“We’re not here to litigate personal conduct.”

Claire laughed once.

“You really should have told Grant that before he mixed personal conduct with my father’s refinancing.”

Grant finally looked at her.

“I did not forge your signature.”

“Did you know the loan required my approval?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know I hadn’t approved it?”

A pause.

“Yes.”

There it was.

Maya leaned forward.

“And yet Hale funded.”

Grant’s attorney objected to the wording.

Nobody cared.

Grant tried another approach.

“Claire, your father came to us days from insolvency.”

“So you helped him commit fraud?”

“I helped keep four hundred people employed.”

“My family keeps using those employees every time someone asks why they lied.”

Grant’s jaw tightened.

“You think morality is cleaner when you’ve never had to meet payroll.”

I saw Claire flinch.

Then straighten.

“You cheated on me while your firm was negotiating against my family.”

“Those things were separate.”

“Were they?”

Grant said nothing.

That silence was louder than denial.

Maya asked about Jenna.

Grant claimed their relationship began after the financing process had already started.

Claire knew from Melanie’s records that this might technically be true by a few weeks.

But something still felt wrong.

Then Grant said, “If you sign the ratification now, we can still extend the facility.”

Claire stared.

“There it is.”

“What?”

“You’re still trying to get my signature.”

“Because without it, Hale has enforcement rights.”

“Against the company?”

“Yes.”

“And the patents?”

Grant didn’t answer quickly enough.

Maya noticed.

“So the core patent portfolio is the real collateral target.”

Grant stood.

“This meeting is over.”

Claire didn’t stop him.

But as he reached the door, she said:

“Grant.”

He turned.

“You cheated on me because you’re selfish. I can eventually understand selfish.”

His face hardened.

“But if you used me while your company positioned itself to take my family’s business…”

She let the sentence hang.

Grant’s smile returned.

Thin.

“You’re assuming your family still has something worth taking.”

He left.

Maya waited until the door closed.

Then she said, “That wasn’t arrogance.”

“What was it?”

“Knowledge.”

Grant knew something about Whitmore Orthopedic Systems that Claire still didn’t.

And he expected her to learn it too late.
