Chapter 7 - My Father Took $120,000 From Mercer

The bank record nearly destroyed the version of Dad I had been defending.
Mercer Foundation payment to Thomas Carter:
$120,000 consulting settlement.
A year after his secret return to the museum.
No published work followed.
No consulting credit.
No tax dispute.
Just money.
I stared at the number.
My father had spent his final decade complaining about wealthy institutions buying silence.
Had he done exactly that?
Julian did not defend him.
Good.
“Could be legitimate.”
“Could be hush money.”
“Yes.”
Leah heard us.
“That wasn't Grandpa.”
I wanted to say she was right.
Instead:
“We don't know.”
She became angry.
“You do.”
“No, sweetheart.”
“He hated lying.”
That was when I remembered something painful.
Dad had lied beautifully when he believed the reason was good enough.
About deployments.
Illness.
Money.
Fear.
Adults rename secrecy when they think they're protecting children.
He had done it too.

I took Leah home.
That night she refused Arabic practice for the first time since he died.
