Chapter 8 - THE STORY THEY PREPARED IN CASE I SAID NO

My withdrawal from the proposed investment became formal.
Hale Capital sent written notice that due diligence had uncovered unresolved concerns and no transaction would proceed at that time.
No accusation of fraud.
No mention of Greta.
No fountain.
Financial reasons only.
Within six hours, a gossip site published:
BILLIONAIRE TRISTAN HALE ABANDONS ENGAGEMENT AFTER FAMILY DISPUTE
Then:
SOURCES: HALE’S MOTHER CLASHED WITH WALLACE BRIDE OVER WEDDING
Then:
OLD-MONEY WALLACES BLINDSIDED BY MERCURIAL TECH BILLIONAIRE
Mercurial.
I had been called many things.
That one amused Adrian.
“It begins.”
“Can we sue?”
“For being called mercurial? Please don’t make me.”
Then a business reporter called.
He had been told I withdrew a nearly completed Wallace investment after “an emotional confrontation involving my mother.”
That phrasing mattered.
Nearly completed.
It was not.
I had never received a final investment agreement.
Who told him?
Source confidential.
Of course.
Then another claim:
I had previously promised Malcolm I would backstop Wallace’s refinancing after marriage.
False.
Adrian issued a narrow correction.
Mr. Hale made no personal backstop commitment and no binding investment commitment to Wallace Holdings.
Nothing more.
That same afternoon, Cumberland National requested direct confirmation.
Did I personally guarantee Wallace obligations?
No.
Did Hale Capital have a binding commitment?
No.
Did I authorize Wallace to describe marital assets as financial support?
No.
The bank thanked us.
That was all.
No drama.
But Wallace now had to explain the discrepancy.
Then our diligence team found a communications draft inside the data room.
Prepared by Wallace’s outside PR firm three weeks before the engagement party.
Scenario:
HALE TRANSACTION DELAY / PERSONAL COMPLICATION
Talking points:
Wallace Holdings remains financially strong.
Hale discussions were always exploratory.
Personal relationship issues should not be conflated with company performance.
Tristan Hale has historically been uncomfortable with legacy-family governance.
Sources close to the family express concern that pressure from Hale’s mother complicated engagement discussions.
I read the last bullet twice.
“My mother.”
Adrian nodded.
They had already prepared to blame Helen if things went wrong.
That was clue number four.
Not necessarily because they expected Greta to throw her into a fountain.
Because Helen represented a known fault line.
The poor mother who did not fit.
The boy from the slums still tied to her.
If I withdrew, the Wallaces could explain it as emotional insecurity rather than a financial judgment.
Then we found an email from Greta to the PR adviser.
Do not attack Tristan directly. That will push him away. If needed, position Helen as overprotective / uncomfortable with our world.
The date:
nineteen days before the party.
My chest felt hollow.
Greta had prepared a public narrative against my mother before publicly humiliating her.
Not because she planned the fountain.
Because she already viewed Helen as the easiest explanation for anything I refused.
I forwarded the email to my mother.
Then immediately regretted it.
She called.
“Why would you send me that?”
“I thought you should know.”
“No.”
“What?”
“You thought truth means giving me every ugly thing people say about me.”
I went quiet.
Helen continued:
“I know she looked down on me. I don’t need her marketing team to confirm it.”
Another lesson.
Evidence can protect.
It can also become another way to make someone relive humiliation.
“I’m sorry.”
“Good.”
Then:
“Are you all right?”
I laughed.
“You got pushed into a fountain.”
“I asked about you.”
That was Helen.
I said:
“No.”
May you like
She answered:
“Good. Now maybe you’re finally being honest.”
