Chapter 11 - Arrests Before Sunrise

Ryan was arrested the next morning outside his gym in Cherry Creek.
Grant was picked up at his office.
Brooke surrendered through counsel before detectives could knock on her door.
Diane was not criminally charged at first, but she was subpoenaed and later named in the civil fraud complaint for knowingly benefiting from stolen funds and participating in related transfers.
I did not attend the arrests.
I was at my maternal-fetal medicine appointment, lying on an exam table while a technician measured my daughter’s heartbeat and fluid levels. The baby was fine. I cried in relief anyway.
By noon, every local legal reporter in Denver seemed to know some version of the story: high-level executive, luxury penthouse, domestic assault, family fraud, forged marital papers. My company’s communications team shielded me from press requests, and Mara got a temporary sealing order on certain medical records.
Ryan’s first call from jail was not to me.
It was to Mara.
He wanted to “work something out.”
She declined.
At the advisement hearing, prosecutors described the conduct plainly: assault on a pregnant woman, unlawful restraint, attempted coercion, forgery, criminal impersonation tied to financial instruments, and conspiracy-related offenses connected to a planned property and asset transfer.
The judge issued strict no-contact orders.
For the first time since New Year’s Eve, I slept six uninterrupted hours.
But peace didn’t arrive with the arrests.
Only space did.
Space to breathe.
Space to understand how much of my marriage had been negotiation disguised as affection. Space to admit that I had spent years earning money and almost no time asking whether the people spending it with me would protect me if I ever stopped.
When I woke the next morning, I stood in front of the mirror and looked at the healing burn.
It wasn’t pretty.
It probably never would be.
May you like
But it was honest.
More honest, in fact, than almost anything in my marriage had been by the end.
