Chapter 9 - THE HEARING BEFORE THE BIGGER REVEAL
The probate hearing lasted two days.
Marcus sat with two lawyers.
Vanessa sat with her own.
Raymond sat in the gallery.
I testified about the safe, Dad’s key, his instructions, and what happened at the funeral.
Marcus’s attorney tried to make caregiving sound like influence.
“You controlled Mr. Grant’s medication?”
“I organized it according to his doctors’ instructions.”
“You handled bills?”
“When he asked.”
“You had access to his home?”
“I was his daughter.”
“You benefited from being near him.”
I looked at Marcus.
“So did he. He chose not to come.”
That ended that line of questioning quickly.
Dana testified about transfers.
Peter explained signature differences and the fake power of attorney.
The notary records came in.
So did the loan documents.
Then Samuel introduced Dad’s contemporaneous ledger.
Marcus’s attorney objected.
The judge admitted it subject to final evidentiary weight.
At the end of day two, the judge ordered temporary freezes on several disputed accounts and extended the stay on foreclosure.
Then she asked Samuel the question I had been asking for weeks.
“Counsel, you continue referring to a trust setoff provision. Where is the governing instrument?”
Samuel stood.
“In a sealed supplement executed by William Grant nine months before his death.”
Marcus twisted toward him.
“Nine months?”
I looked at Samuel.
He had known all along.
The judge ordered the supplement produced for in-camera review before the next session.
Outside the courtroom Marcus came toward me, stopping only when deputies shifted position.
“You changed it.”
“I didn’t know it existed.”
“You’re lying.”
His anger was genuine.
So was his fear.
Then he said something revealing.
“He promised me half.”
I believed him.
That was what made the approaching truth more dangerous.
