Chapter 5 - THE OFFER FROM CLAUDIA

Claudia came to our house on a Sunday.

She did not knock first.

She tried her old key.

It no longer worked.

I had changed the locks.

She stood on our front porch in a cream wool coat, holding a leather folder.

Sarah spoke to her through the security camera.

“What do you want?”

“To fix this.”

“You mean Lily?”

A pause.

“This entire mess.”

That told us enough.

We allowed her inside only after Megan joined by video and after Lily went to my sister’s house for the afternoon.

Claudia sat at our kitchen table like she owned that too.

She opened the folder.

Inside was a proposed family settlement.

Sarah would receive $3 million immediately.

Her annual trust distributions would continue.

The company would cover Lily’s medical bills and therapy.

In exchange, Sarah would release all claims regarding historical trust accountings, resign any beneficiary-information rights beyond annual summaries, and agree not to provide documents voluntarily to governmental investigators without legal compulsion.

Megan spoke through the laptop.

“That last provision is unacceptable.”

Claudia smiled.

“This is a family agreement.”

Sarah looked at her.

“You keep saying family when you mean secrecy.”

Claudia’s expression hardened.

“You have no idea what you are threatening.”

“Then tell me.”

“Your father built something that employs hundreds of people. Jared has spent his life carrying that weight while you ran away and played normal family with Ryan.”

Sarah went completely still.

“I didn’t run away.”

Claudia leaned forward.

“You abandoned your responsibilities.”

“No. I escaped your house.”

The words landed harder than shouting.

Claudia stood.

“If you keep going, there may be nothing left to inherit.”

Sarah almost laughed.

“That threat doesn’t work anymore.”

For the first time, Claudia looked uncertain.

Sarah continued.

“I read the trust.”

That was the moment Claudia understood she had lost her oldest weapon.

She closed the folder.

“You think a document makes you powerful?”

“No,” Sarah said. “I think finally reading one makes me harder to lie to.”

Claudia left without another word.

Before sunset, Jared’s criminal attorney contacted the prosecutor seeking a plea discussion in Lily’s assault case.

And Caldwell Development’s board suddenly scheduled an “emergency records modernization.”

Megan’s response was immediate.

“We need a preservation order.”

Sarah looked at me.

Then at the family settlement still sitting on our counter.

“Get one.”
