Chapter 6 - THE PORSCHE DISAPPEARED

The wage case moved separately from the old ownership dispute.

That mattered.

Claire did not need to solve a thirty-year corporate mystery to prove she had worked seventy-seven days without proper pay.

Labor investigators gathered schedules, texts, time records, bank statements, and testimony from other workers.

David’s Porsche disappeared from its regular parking space after forensic accountants established that its lease had been funded through misdirected restaurant money.

Someone in the kitchen taped a purple paper star to the empty parking sign.

Claire removed it.

The dishwasher frowned.

“He deserves it.”

“My daughter’s hungry nights are not decorations.”

He took the star back.

Claire did not want Rory’s pain turned into office humor.

She also refused interview requests built around the angle:

SIX-YEAR-OLD TAKES DOWN MILLIONAIRE RESTAURATEUR

“What about everybody else?” she asked reporters.

The cook whose electricity had been shut off.

The dishwasher borrowing rent.

The hostess delaying medication.

Rory had opened the door.

She had not been the only person standing behind it.

Then David’s mother called.

Margaret Sterling.

Claire expected hostility.

Instead Margaret asked one question.

“Did Thomas leave you his blue ledger?”

Claire became still.

“What ledger?”

Margaret hung up.

That confirmed the Sterling family had known Thomas retained records.

The next breakthrough came in discovery.

David had searched Thomas Carter’s name repeatedly for years.

He had also requested background information on Claire months before hiring her.

Then investigators found drafts of severance packages David had prepared but never offered.

Each included unusually broad language releasing Sterling Hospitality from “any past, present, derivative, property, trust, title, or accounting claims.”

That clause had nothing to do with unpaid wages.

Claire stared at it.

“He wanted me to sign this?”

Marcus nodded.

“Eventually.”

“Why?”

Nobody knew yet.

But the theory was changing.

David had not hired Thomas Carter’s daughter merely because he feared an old ledger.

He needed something from her.

Something only Claire could give him.
