Chapter 2 - The Child Before Emma

His name was Lucas Grant.

He had been seven.

Two years earlier, Lucas attended St. Catherine’s first grade.

Same hallway.

Same classroom.

Same teacher.

His mother, Rebecca Grant, answered my call after nine that night.

When I said Ms. Preston’s name, she stopped breathing for a second.

“Did she hurt your child?”

“Yes.”

Rebecca began crying.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

Lucas had told his parents that Preston sometimes dug her fingernails into the back of his neck when he read too slowly.

Once she squeezed his wrist until he cried.

Another time she kept him alone during recess.

And she told him:

“Nobody believes children who always complain.”

Almost Emma’s words.

Rebecca complained to Caldwell.

The school said Lucas had emotional-regulation problems.

Then Lucas shoved another child during recess.

Suddenly every conversation became about his behavior.

His parents withdrew him.

“Did you file something formally?”

“Yes.”

“With the school?”

“Four pages.”

I sat very still.

Caldwell had told me there had never been a formal complaint.

Rebecca continued.

“We also contacted the school’s insurer.”

“What happened?”

Her voice changed.

“We signed an agreement.”

Confidential settlement.

She could not give me every term.

But she could tell investigators.

And she could tell me one thing that was not confidential.

“The school installed extra cameras afterward.”

The backup system.

Not a normal IT upgrade.

A safety measure.

“Was Preston fired?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“They told us her conduct was misunderstood but agreed to additional supervision.”

My stomach tightened.

“Additional supervision?”

Rebecca was silent.

Then:

“She wasn’t supposed to be alone with young students anymore.”

I closed my eyes.

Emma had been alone with her.

Behind a closed door.

While Caldwell watched.
