Chapter 14 - THE SENTENCE MY FATHER WROTE BEFORE MY SON’S BIRTHDAY

The final conference happened without Dad physically present.

He was already serving his sentence.

His civil lawyer appeared.

Jenna sat beside her own counsel.

Rebecca beside me.

Thomas Keene.

Caroline Wu.

A mediator overseeing the last trust-restoration disputes.

No Ethan.

No Madison.

Children had already carried enough adult evidence.

The email thread filled the screen.

Dad:

Need Mara pushed hard enough that Keene sees it.

Jenna:

Use me, not Ethan.

Dad:

She expects conflict with you. Won’t mean anything.

Jenna:

Then what?

Dad:

Ethan.

Jenna:

No.

Dad:

Not hurt. Embarrassed.

Jenna:

Dad.

Dad:

You want Briarstone saved or not?

Twelve minutes.

Then Jenna:

What exactly are you thinking?

Dad:

Something public.

Jenna:

Like?

Dad:

Madison can do it. Mara won’t go nuclear on a kid.

Jenna:

That’s messed up.

Dad:

She’ll yell at me, not Madison.

Jenna:

And Keene?

Dad:

Needs to see the financial retaliation afterward.

My skin went cold even after everything I already knew.

Jenna stared at her own old messages.

“I should have stopped.”

No one answered.

The thread continued.

Jenna:

What if Mara doesn’t touch trust money?

Dad:

Doesn’t matter. School, cruise, whatever she pays personally. Malcolm says pattern matters.

Malcolm’s lawyer immediately noted that mischaracterized his advice.

The record already showed it.

Then:

Jenna:

What prank?

Dad:

Ask Madison. Something messy.

An hour later:

Jenna:

She says mud bucket on cake.

Dad:

Perfect.

My stomach turned.

Perfect.

Jenna:

Ethan will be upset.

Dad:

For five minutes.

Jenna:

Mara might never forgive us.

Dad:

She always does.

That line hurt in a different place.

Because for years, I had.

Not forgiveness exactly.

Cleanup.

I paid.

I organized.

I mediated.

I fixed Christmas.

I took Mom to appointments.

I sent tuition.

I booked cruises.

I stayed.

Dad had mistaken my return for proof there was no cost.

Then another message.

Dad:

Make sure it happens after candles. Cole needs the reaction on video.

Jenna:

Why video?

Dad:

If Keene waffles, Malcolm may need corroboration.

Jenna:

You’re seriously using this for the trust thing?

Dad:

I’m protecting the trust from Mara’s emotions.

I almost laughed.

The man forging my approvals believed he was protecting the trust from me.

Then Jenna:

What if she stays calm?

Long pause.

Dad:

She won’t.

Another.

Jenna:

And if she does?

Dad:

Push the money. Tell her she’s punishing Madison. I’ll tell her Ethan needs to toughen up.

Every sentence from that night existed here before he spoke it.

Not word for word.

Enough.

The confrontation had been scripted.

Then the final messages.

Jenna:

Auditor email still hits Sunday?

Dad:

8:30.

My breath stopped.

He knew the exact time.

Caroline explained quietly:

“Whitestone’s system schedules final annual reports at 8:30 p.m. on completion day. Richard knew from prior years.”

Dad:

Need petition ready before she starts freezing things.

Jenna:

This is getting insane.

Dad:

It is temporary. Briarstone closes, trust gets repaid, everyone stays whole.

Jenna:

And Ethan?

Dad:

Ethan gets over a ruined cake.

Jenna did not reply for nine minutes.

Then:

I don’t like this.

Dad:

You like your mortgage paid.

She began sobbing beside me.

No one interrupted.

The final email came from Dad to Malcolm Price, copied nowhere else.

Sent at 4:18 p.m. on Ethan’s birthday.

Subject:

Tonight.

Malcolm,

Keene will be there.

If Mara reacts the way she always does, I want the petition ready first thing tomorrow.

Do not mention Briarstone unless required.

The family issue has to stand on its own.

Malcolm replied:

Richard, do not manufacture conduct. I will not file anything based on staged evidence.

Dad answered:

No one is manufacturing her temper.

Malcolm:

Then let whatever happens happen naturally.

Dad:

Understood.

He did not understand.

Or did not care.

The last recovered message was not to Malcolm.

It was to Jenna at 5:02.

Dad:

Malcolm is getting nervous. Keep him out of the prank details.

Jenna:

Maybe we should stop.

Dad:

Too late.

Jenna:

Why?

Dad:

Because once Mara sees the audit, I lose the trust.

Then one final message appeared on the screen.

May you like

Richard Mercer:

The cake isn’t the point. I need her to look unstable before she sees what I did.
