Chapter 9 - WHY CLAIRE NEEDED LIAM TO LOSE CONTROL

Claire asked to speak directly.
The meeting took place in Evelyn’s Denver office. Liam and Claire sat at opposite ends of a walnut conference table with their attorneys beside them.
There was no champagne, no swimwear, and no audience to impress.
Claire began without an apology.
“I did not marry you planning to steal a resort.”
“I know.”
“You built a life where every room belonged to you before we entered it.”
“That is how you experienced it.”
“That is what happened.”
Liam waited.
Claire described years of arriving at fundraisers as Liam Mercer’s wife, attending dinners where men asked whether her design company was “a hobby,” and watching Andrew fail publicly while Liam’s investments survived.
Some injuries were real.
Some comparisons were unfair.
None required Dylan or stolen files.
“Summit Basin was supposed to prove I could build something without your permission,” she said.
“You financed it through our joint home-equity line.”
“I intended to repay it.”
“With a settlement you expected to force after Vail.”
“Yes.”
“And Alder Peak’s private data?”
“Redstone wanted evidence the area could support another premium property.”
“They refused it.”
“One executive refused it. I believed pressure would change the company’s position.”
“So you created pressure.”
Claire looked toward the window.
“If you had hit Dylan, shouted threats, or dragged me away from the camera, Northline’s acquisition would have opened under a scandal. You would have paid to contain it.”
“And if I did nothing?”
“Dylan was supposed to copy the final pricing files and erase the corridor footage. Summit Basin still had value.”
The hot-tub scene had been a contingency disguised as an affair.
Claire’s legs around Dylan, the champagne, the rehearsed insult, and her satisfied smile were intended to provoke a response large enough to become financial leverage.
The affair made the performance easier.
It was not the ultimate objective.
“Did Dylan know you were using him too?” Liam asked.
“He knew about Summit Basin.”
“Did he know you never planned a life with him?”
Claire’s silence answered.
Rachel shifted slightly.
“Claire, answer only if you choose.”
“I liked him,” Claire said. “He made me feel wanted.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
“No. I never planned to stay with him.”
Liam thought of Dylan laughing in the hot tub, convinced he had won something.
Claire had not only betrayed her husband. She had sold different futures to every person involved.
Andrew was promised a successful development.
Her parents were promised Liam’s support.
Dylan was promised status and ownership.
Redstone was promised leverage.
Liam was offered a repair trip while she prepared to make him publicly dangerous.
Her motive was not simple greed.
She wanted to escape being seen as an extension of Liam by constructing a business, identity, and financial exit that no one could deny.
But she tried to build independence out of other people’s property, trust, homes, and private information.
“When did you decide the marriage was over?” Liam asked.
“Six months ago.”
“Then why not leave?”
“Because leaving with a settlement felt like proof that everything I had came from you.”
“So you took more from me in secret.”
Claire pressed her lips together.
“Yes.”
It was the first answer without disguise.
She did not ask for forgiveness.
Liam did not offer it.
The meeting ended with Claire agreeing to a complete accounting of Summit Basin and the joint debt. She also withdrew her request that Liam suppress the resort investigation.
As everyone stood, Claire placed a sealed envelope on the table.
“It contains the only remaining copy of the hot-tub recording from my phone.”
Evelyn did not touch it.
“Your attorney should preserve it.”
“Do whatever you need.”
Liam looked at Claire.
“Why give it back now?”
“Because it didn’t show what I wanted.”
“What did it show?”
Claire’s expression tightened.
“You.”
That evening, Evelyn reviewed the recording with both legal teams’ authorization.
The video showed Claire wrapped around Dylan, delivering her rehearsed line.
It showed her waiting for Liam to shout.
Instead, Liam nodded.
“Then enjoy it.”
After he left the water, the phone continued recording Claire and Dylan.
Her smile disappeared.
“That wasn’t supposed to happen,” she whispered.
Dylan asked, “What do we do now?”
May you like
Claire looked directly toward the camera.
“We make him come back.”
